Quail

Thank you. We just noticed it in the yard. i guess that was a good thing, no one disturbing it.

From the looks of the nest, eIther there were multiple hens, or more likely, something has found the nest and scattered the eggs. If it was the latter the mom probaably won't return.

Yes, it looks disturbed that‘s for sure. probably wasnt the best place for a nest, so exposed in a dead end corner. i didnt see any downy feathers .

There are quite a few animals, snakes and birds that love eggs and look for ground nests. Quail are not known for hiding thier nests very well. One Easter, during an Egg Hunt, the little girls came along with quite a few quail eggs in thier baskets. They were too little to know they weren't just decorated eggs. Forunately the quail just went somewhere else and laid more eggs.

Well, there is an abundance of crows in the area, so one or more of them could be what ruined the nest.

I had some fungus erupt in my yard that looked very like that. You sure they are eggs?

That’s a good thought, but it really looks like eggs.

Lindac, I thought they were eggs too because it appeared to me that several were cracked open, which also is what made me thing of predation.

And the area looks a bit hollowed out, like momma prepared the spot (a little). Doves make poor nests too.
