I need to see why you want to layer rugs so pics of your space would be great.

You can use an outdoor rug designed to look like jute or sisal. They are polypropelene.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting - I will update the post with a picture below. The rug in the photo is NOT what we are going to use. It didn't look right. The rug in the dining room may also be replaced if we can't find something that looks right with it in the living room. Coming from an apartment, our furniture is very mid-century modern, and I'm looking to make the space more transitional. This will include 1) new dining chairs, 2) probably donating that blue mid century chair unless I can make it look transitional, 3) getting a second couch for the right side of the room that mixes in well with our current couch but again makes the space look transitional. We need to keep the coffee table and make it work.

When looking at inspiration photos, a lot of my favorite transitional accounts tend to layer rugs with sissel, and I love the look. We also will need a large rug to fill the space (10'x14' is what is in the photo), so layering rugs would mean I could use a smaller one on top and give me more options.

Overall feeling very overwhelmed by the decorating process. I want the house to look put together rather than the sparse mid-century look we have now!

Why layer rugs? Usually, this is done when the area rug is not larger enough for the space, but that is not your issue in this room.

@BeverlyFLADeziner I first looked into it when I was having trouble finding 10'x14' that looked good in the space. And then I just started liking the aesthetic of it. Studio McGee does it a lot so I thought perhaps some folks just do it because it looks nice?

I just have the gray couch. I was thinking of going with cream for additional furniture? Then new stools, dining chairs, and remove the blue lounge chair. New pillows as well.

To me, layered rugs just look like you couldn't find the right size, or are trying to make the wrong sized rugs work in a new space. They are a tripping hazard and look clunky imo. Your current rugs look great just as they are, and fit your streamlined furnishings. Add some end tables, lamps, and more art to your room to get the look you want.

I'm a bit late on this thread but I think what you ended up with is perfect! The bits of red and the pattern on the rug ties to the dining room. Reading through this discussion helped me clarify why I'm wanting to layer rugs in my living room. Because I'm a slob! I frequently eat at my coffee table and I sometimes drop food. I hate how dirty the rug gets in front of the couch so I want something that's easy to clean, feels soft on my feet and provides a little color. I'm thinking about having a larger jute rug anchoring the space and layering a smaller washable floor cloth type of rug over it on an angle in front of the sectional. The washable rugs I'm looking at are made by RealLife Rugs. It looks quite thin and would probably lie flat over the jute. A small washable rug would be easy to clean frequently, would save wear and tear on the larger more $$ rug and is cheap to replace, swap out for the seasons, etc. Has anyone seen or done this type of layering over jute? What's your opinion?
