Today, I saw a group of Guacamole just like that. The stems had good sized leaves and flowers except it was variegated.

Yes, they were impressive.

its just a flower stalk ... petiole.. with leaves ... and if there is a term for that .. its escaping me right now ...

i did a quick scan of terms at the library.. but in my caffeine induced haze.. im not seeing a term.. but it sure fells like there should be one ...

perhaps bract ... check link above ... but i think that should be up closer to the flower ... also check: inflorescence leaves

Thank you for all the comments. What I take from this is that, although not the expected normal, this presentation is not abnormal.

Inflorescence leaves: (in Hosta) the larger, occasionally flat, leaf-like structures on the flower stem. That does describe it. Thanks Ken, your knowledge is amazing.

Loretta, thanks for sharing the pictures. Now I know my guac is not alone in this habit. I can move on and not wonder if I should be cutting it out or replacing the plant. Will do neither. I will try to get pictures as it matures and flowers.

Foliated scape, which is common in the fragrant lineage. Fasciated scapes have many more buds and stranger appearance.

Yeah, one of my Guacamoles does the same thing every year- I generally cut them off but I'm one that doesn't like hosta flowers in general anyway.
