backsplash choice with colored range?

We’re trying to pick anything but a subway tile for a backsplash to go with a blue or teal blue star range.

  1. Will long hexagons look weird in the narrow spot under our window? The little blue tile in photo represents color of range.

  2. Will the color or shape of this tile draw attention too much since the range will be the centerpiece?

Have you thought of running the tile horizontally? The color coordinates beautifully with the stove and cabinet colors.

I like the colors together. Measure to see how the back splash tiles will fit under the window. Using them horizontally may look better because you will end up with so many short vertical pieces under the window with a vertical design.

Or use a coordinating grout, rather than the high-contrast used in the sample. Then the shorter bits won't draw attention.

I’m glad you think the colors work. I’m looking for a bunch of phot examples of people doing these horizontally now. I hadn’t really considered it. Thank you!

Well, colors on the Internet are imperfect to say the least, but the range color, if teal, has a lot of green hue and those tile look predominantly blue. So that is going to look off IMO. If the range is true teal, then go with a more blue/green tile.

You’d better get the range and then match the tile.

I’m with @Rachel Lee. You’re “star” of the room is a unique colored range. Everyone else has to work with its color.
Not sure that blue and any teal will go together. Remember that in your kitchen, with your lighting, vertically installed tiles will look a different color than the way you shop for them. Can you wait till the range is installed? And your lighting?

I would also wait for the range to be installed/at least arrive. That is your love, tile can be found in many colors. Many times the small range metal samples read a little different when in larger scale.

I think a picket tile will work fine, but like others I'm not convinced that what you show is the right color. What you show read very blue-gray to me and at least on my monitor doesn't look right with the range color. I think a more neutral gray or greige would work better. But it's good advice to wait until you range is in place to make the color choice, even if you have to wait a while (there's even an abbreviation for this on the site, ABB = All but backsplash).

I like the color combo as reading on my monitor, I'm not seeing a green tone from the small stove sample, but I do agree you should wait until you have the range in to make your decision, as others have noted, it can be really difficult to gauge colors from small samples, and things can look a whole lot different once you get the stove. You may also find you want to stay away from color in the splash, depending how the stove looks in your space.

    BTW: I'm envious -- I want a Bluestar!

Thanks all! We have a blue star color swatch booklet but the squares are tiny. We may do ABB! The range will probably take 6+ months to arrive but we could rush the tile.

Wait, but select 2-3 tiles so you are ready quickly when stove is installed. More important is ensuring your infrastructure is put in place properly so you don’t have installation problems or heat issues with higher heat generated from this range. You might ask if there is a range installed in your area that you could go see in person. If the owner would be open to that. You could also learn about any issues they might have encountered.

IMO the Star has not arrived and until it is in place there is no way I would do backsplash or wall color. I think a simple white large format backsplash would be my choice even a galss tile but simple.

You’re all absolutely right. I ordered some neutral whites in this shape from Fireclay.

I really like the way the tile are laid out in the first pic (the sink pic), I had debated doing something like that when I was choosing tile; it's different enough to add some visual interest without being too far out there.

BTW: My only experience w/Fireclay is ordering couple batches of samples from Fireclay and talking through color choices, but based on that experience their customer service was a pleasure to deal with and very helpful -- you may want to reach out to them for some design and selection choices.

I live 30 min from the Fireclay showroom so I’ll go in person. Thanks!!

When you go to the showroom, take a lot of photos of the color you’ve selected. But remember that showroom lighting isn’t necessarily the same as your kitchen’s. What a great start to a new kitchen!

    Lucky you! :0)

If you go with white cabinet, white countertop and white backsplash tile…..you could very well be back on Houzz unhappy that the whites do not blend. I like the tile you chose and once your range is in place you can be sure of the color. I would not do white.
