My wife and I are in the process of working on our new home design. We have a staircase in the house going from the basement to the 2nd floor. We would like to staircase in the foyer to do a 3/4 turn from the main floor to the 2nd floor. Then we would like the staircase going from the main floor to the basement to be U shaped with a landing. We were initially told this was possible. Now after discussing with a potential builder, we are told this would not be possible and the stairs must to follow the same direction going from floor to floor of the house (i.e 3/4 turn up, 3/4 turn down). Is this true? Is it possible to have staircases going in different directions (or shapes) from floor to floor?
