Cactus Root Rot?

I have had this cactus for about 9 months. We potted it when we got it and it has grown since then, but last month I noticed some brown spots near the bottom - see photos. Do you have any recommendations about what to do? Not sure if this is root rot and needs to be replanted or something else. Looking for recommendations - thanks!

The second photo looks like it is rotting but the only way to tell is to pull it out of the pot. is it soft at the base? How often do you water? Overwatering is death for a catus. it’s a nice size, hope it’s not root rot.

What growing medium did you use for the repot? I can just see a but through the top covering of white pebbles and the medium looks rather peaty. If so, peat retains water. Another thing thats not good for cactus. This can also promote root rot.
