Tiling A Shower With Hexagons

Hello All,

I’m taking my first attempt at tiling a shower and have run into some questions regarding the tile installation. I’m using hexagonal tiles (11”x13”), so there are some added difficulties that I’m unsure of how to navigate. Ive included a photo of how I plan to lay the tile for reference as well as a photo of the shower before I finished waterproofing. My questions are:

  1. Does it matter what wall I start tiling on?

  2. I plan on using a ledger board to lay the tile. Because I am using hexagons, there will be gaps on the first row over the ledger board (see tiles with dashes on my drawing) that I must fill to complete the rest of the tiling. My plan is to cut a couple of hexagon tiles in half and use those half tiles as place holders with double sided tape. Is this the right strategy?

  3. Do I install leveling clips on the bottom row of tiles that touches the ledger board? I’m using the lash leveling system.

  4. Does anyone have any tips for laying hexagons on a vertical surface? I understand it can be more difficult than laying rectangular tile.

Thanks so much for any insight or assistance!
