Please Help with Dining Room

My dining room is super long and narrow and finding a dining table was difficult, but I found one.

My issues are my chairs. I don’t like mine. I’m also having trouble with window coverings and hardware.

On the other end of the room, I am going to put bookcases because I want it to be a multipurpose room. The issue is my kitchen. I will post pic which will explain.

Maybe something like this at the other end with a comfy chair and floor lamp

Photo #1 . Keep the chairs and paint the short wall with the art and sconces something very dark...not black ...the color of the sliders...it will make the wall an accent while receding, visually,

I would not have any window treatments. Privacy? Add bamboo in containers.

The other end of the dining area could hold a server, mirror...

Hard to see, but notice the animal skin in front of it...you have the space.

Judy G Designs, the sliders r so unattractive. I feel they need curtains. My hardware is cast iron in living room but I feel I need the metal that is on table legs and trim of table for dining room curtain rods. What do u think? The easiest thing to do would get a credenza. Do u think bookcases r a bad idea?

jck910, the white chairs r cool. I’m going to google them.

Judy G. Designs, how about a deep pink for accent wall?

Jck910, the white chairs are affordable. Love them more now!

I like that you hung curtains higher. I would go with some console table below your picture.

Celery Girl, I have 2 sets of curtains. One is Pottery Barn Linen and the other is sheers. I like the look of the sheers, not so heavy. But they r too short. The ones that I hung high make me feel like I’m in a movie theater. There is a 6 inch hem on sheers but can u remove a sheer’s hem without damaging them.

There is no room for a console table at that end.

Celery Girl, that gray wall looks good.

Seems your bookcases have been 'forgotten'? Not a bad idea if that's where you can place them. Will you also need chairs by them, or will the table be for reading?

    last modified: 4 years ago

Why I don't mind the chairs: the greyhound [?] has long slender lines, and chair legs are slender. Slender sconces too, and the design adds something. Is the painting older? painted by someone you know.. ?.. but the sconces aren't in discussion, and not my type -- but do they influence what you think about the style of the chairs?

I’m going to use the dining table as my desk. My vision is to have bookcases on opposite end of dining room where the etagere is now. I just bought it at an estate sale and haven’t found a place for it. U can see location in pics I posted.

    Here r some inspiration pics:

My issue is the opening in kitchen. How will I get bookcase and back of kitchen cabinet to connect with our looking like a mistake.

Everdebz, I love the sconces. They r large and so beautiful. Zoom in on them. The painting can be relocated, but I think it works. I don’t like the chairs.

The curtains r driving me crazy too. I can’t decide between the two.

I'm not a pro, but why can't the bookcase butt against the side/back of the cabinet? the depth of a foot or so would show from the kitchen side... ?

    I had found this one:

I think what you have going now works well together. The table, chairs (keep! they add texture), art (love) and sconces. I don't like the heaviness of the panels. Since you will be using this area as a desk, sheers are better (allows in light and you can see out). They also help to soften the area.

Please clarify - in one post you said no room for console table, but in another you said bookcases at each end of the area. The table/chairs can be moved down a tad so that a narrow console table (open or enclosed - which would give you some storage space) would fit... or is the step in the way? Without more photos, it is hard to tell.

I would buy the largest bookcase that will fit on the far wall, and not worry about the little bit of it that can be seen from the kitchen. Not a big deal.

Do you drink wine? would you have enough room to mount bottles horizontally on the wall opposite the window?

Allison0704, thank u I agree with u about the sheers. I meant to say bookcases on opposite end of dining table side of room. I’m having a terrible time getting an I photo of room. My photography skills suck. Here r more pics. Hope they help.

Everdebz, my description of room is the issue. LOL The pic I’m posting has an area circled that will show what case will but against.

Itel mover, there isn’t enough room to display wines, but the wall desperately needs something. I thought of making it an accent wall not the one with the painting.

Itel mover, I also want the book cases to look built in.

Don’t worry about the bookcase butting up against what you have circled above. The things on your counter will camouflage it just fine. Don’t put wine bottles on the walls , please. Maybe just get all of your furniture in and then decide what to hang. I love your greyhound painting and those sconces, by the way!

Ikloes, thanks. I love the sconces too. I feel like I’m running in circles trying to get this room to be what I need.

I think the sconces and art need to be lowered to center 5' above the floor. Note how they're as high as the slider frame; that's too high. Paint the wall in that dark bluish color the dog is standing on. Add an art light to the painting. We need more info about the multiple purposes your envision for the space. I think a slim table/desk could work on the kitchen end of your space. It would be like a credenza or even a serving or drinks table for parties. You could build in a bookcase on the lower part of the kitchen wall, and could even close in that gap area. What is on the lower counter left of the upper? Would a wall behind that counter hurt anything other than the bit of light from the sliders?

I’m going to use dining table like a desk. I might need gray chairs. But do I need expensive chairs? Lol I didn’t realize how expensive dining chairs were until I started shopping for them. The chairs I bought came in a pale pink too. I talked myself out of them and bought the brown ones. I regret it every day.

I might do some type of IKEA hack for book cases. My house is small so the idea of double purposing the room by making it a library/dining room works. The only issue is bookcases cabinets butting against the kitchen cabinets. Paranoid that I’ll see it in a pic in article titled, “What in the World”.

Decoenthusiaste, they do need lowered. I’ll paint the wall too. Two easy things I can do. I would like to do a rose color. Check this photo out. Also, the bookcases would go on the opposite end of the painting. My dining table would be my desk. I like the idea of a faux animal skin in front of bookcases.

Be sure to cover the portion of the table where your work surface will be. It is amazing how quickly a nice piece of furniture can be trashed when used everyday as a work space. Believe me! I'm using my drop leaf dining table as a cesk and it will never be the same!

Decoenthusiate, that is true. Question about painting wall. What color should I paint the baseboard?

    last modified: 4 years ago

Shall I say, "don't hate the chairs" ? are they leather or leatherette? what about placing a faux fur that everyone is doing, over chair or 2?

You could try moving art / sconces to side wall, and have end wall accenting, dining chairs as now currently simple.

If bookcase is large, accent wall might not much 'show'...

They r what I call pleather. They work with the table but I’m not loving them. Bookcases will be built before new chairs unless I found something at an estate sale/ market place. The long wall is so long and u only see it if your outside.

I turn every diining room I have into a library dining room. If I had your space, I would put 2 narrow towers of bookshelves on the long wall facing the window with a diining bench-banquette between them, like an alcove. I would put the sconces and the painting in the alcove. At the far end of the room (where you now have the painting./sconces), I would tuck a coffee /tea service in the window corner. In the alcove near the kitchen, I would have a sideboard-like storage unit to hide laptop, printer, router,, and deep enough so the top could be used as a serving buffet, and a wine rack.

Just some general ideas of the elements, not the colors or measurements

This last one is nice if you were willing to place the painting on the wall nearest the kitchen.

You don’t need a purpose built banquette

Lafayette Dining Banquette · More Info

You can also create a simple banquette by buying a long upholstered backless bench and then having an upholsstered back rest made (like a thin horizontal upholstered headboard) and attaching it to the wall.

This is actually a corner entertaiment unit but could be useful in the kitchen-end alcove

Ital mover, Kristin has already told us how she wants the room arranged. Kristin, a rose accent wall would look nice! Leave the baseboard the same color white that it is now. Since you will be using the dining table as a desk, your first priority for dining chairs should be comfort (at least for two on either end). Go ahead and build that bookcase from the corner all the way to the cabinet. That little bit showing on the kitchen side will be no big deal. Have you considered a bookcase unit with shelves on top, cabinet doors on the bottom and a counter surface that could function as a buffet? That could work and still give you a library “feel”. A wall of shelves is a great idea too, though. And again, I would say “no” to hanging a wine rack on the wall. Wine can’t be stored properly at room temperature and if you just put empty bottles in a rack it looks pretty tacky. Once you have decided on your wall color, a small area rug would bring some nice texture to the space. Do you have room for a comfy chair and pretty reading lamp in front of the bookcase in the corner by the slider wall?

Ital Mover, u have great ideas, but my room is so narrow. It took me forever to find a table to narrow enough to fit. The dining table is 38”wide and 108” inches long. I have barely 36 inches from table to wall. Do u think that is enough room for book cases?

Ikloes, I definitely want something like a shelving unit where there is cabinet storage. Maybe even a place for bar supples. I’m not a wine drinker. I am more of a margarita and White Russian girl. My motto is ‘ A cocktail a day keeps the doctor away’

I’m going to buy the paint today. I’ll post pics.

    @kristinhallett

I’m suggesting an alcove with bench seating against the wall, inset between 2 bookcases. Yes, I think you have room to seat people against the wall, in front of a table, with bookshelves on either side of the table. You might not want to do it, or move your painting and sconces (you would need to do that), but you could do it. You could even do it with independent pieces and IKEA hacks, not built ins. But if I wanted to use the dining room for work, that is what I would do, or else create a desk unit at the far end of the room near the kitchen,

    @ikloes

Looks to me like Kristin is capable of speaking for herself and responds to all suggestions. If you’re trying to limit the feedback she gets, it’s probably not going to happen.
