Bathroom vanity mirror placement

last modified: 4 years ago

Hello,

We're quoting on having a large rectangular mirror customized to fit the space above the vanity in our guest bathroom. My question is, how high/low should it go?

We're quoting 2 glass contractors and both recommend to start the glass at the top of the backsplash and then cut out for the sockets, one suggests the mirror to go all the way to the bottom of the metal base of the light fixture, the other to the bottom of the glass light thingies.

I'm also thinking of just ordering the below mirror I found on amazon and placing it as shown. The dimensions of the vanity are about 78" long and the area between the vanity and the metal base of the light fixture is about 38" or so. The amazon mirror is about 60" x 30", although I am looking for one that is a little longer and possibly a little narrower so it fits above the power sockets and below the light fixture. I need to measure what a mirror like that should be.

I wish I had thought to move the power sockets before the contractors patched and painted everything, but at this point I'm leaving them where they are.

PS, the vanity lights are centered over the sinks, it's a long narrow bathroom so its hard to get a good angle for photography. PSS, the 3rd photo below is a duplicate, couldn't figure out how to remove it....

thanks so much for any inputs!

If you got a framed mirror, you could have it above the outlets like your picture. I had a mirror framed for one of my baths.

There is an outlet in this mirror. The outlet has a mirror cover.

    You have several options.

The largest mirror, marked in red, goes from the top of the backsplash, to the metal frame of the light fixture and the width of the vanity top.

The second option is the same width, also starts from the top of the backsplash but ends at the bottom of the light shade (the thingies). So it would stop where the white line is.

The third option is a mirror cut to fit above the outlets, to edge of the sinks and ending at the bottom of the shades. You have to make sure you account for the cover of the outlet which is bigger than the outlet.

You could mark this out in tape or cut brown paper to see what appeals to you the most.

    Good luck!

Consider mounting it below the light "thingies" unless you want to have their reflections and the light bouncing back at you. Especially since you are using clear glass shades. You can test how that looks by buying an inexpensive smaller mirror at a big box store and holding it up at different levels under one of the lights to see if the reflection is too harsh.

Based on the mock up above, raising the bottom of the mirror above the outlets looks skimpy, to me. I'd take it down to the backsplash. We have an outlet embedded in our mirror, with a mirrored outlet plate and have no issues with it.

I would find the mirrors that I like and have the outlets moved now rather than settle on a style such as a full height/length mirror with mirrored outlet plates that doesn't feel like it would match the beautiful update you have done so far.

If you're willing to do more electrical work, putting plugs in the cabinet to replace the ones on the wall would expand your options.

Move the outlets. Yes the wall has been finished and painted. It can be refinished and repainted after the outlets are moved. I had a similar problem with the location of my outlets and the backsplash in my kitchen. I had the electrician return (he wasn’t happy) and had him move two outlets. Then you can have ANY size mirror that you want and don’t have to have mirrors cut to fit the outlets, etc. (There is an expression…”Pound wise and penny foolish.” ) Price out the movement of these two outlets before you buy any mirrors.

I am trying to understand the outlets in the drawers. So obviously you just use everything with the drawer or door (if in a cabinet) open? Trying to understand how that would work in a small bathroom, double vanity, two people getting ready at the same time scenerio.
