Yes, the area will have to be reframed and your trim is just going to be beefier. Make sure the trim and the design work with the rest of your home.

One thought: IF you have been thinking of doing any porch light changes, removing and adding new framing around the door, indoors and out, might well be the time to consider including them.

Why can't you replace the sidelight with a new plate glass? Like a long narrow window framed in next to the new door. I think it will look good.

Just make sure whoever makes this decision on the trim has some design sense. Can you show a photo of the house from the exterior?

(The interior size of trim will not necessarily have to change, as that is just adding drywall.).

We have a converted cape cod...looks like a ranch from the front. We are doing a black door, 3/4 of it is glass. Should the trim be white or black? You have been very helpful.

I'd paint the trim same as the front door: black.

The front needs some help. Without a total redesign, I would rely on some landscaping. Most houses are overlandscaped (overgrown bushes). You don't have the issue. but I would suggest beds all along the sidewalk and the front.

I'd get professional assistance with that, unless you are knowledgable about landscaping.

No grass between the bow window and garage door, so you could buy some large planters with evergreen bushes. Large tree needs to be trimmed up.

Relocating the basketball hoop, new furniture for the front porch and painting the mailbox post black would help also.

@houssaon the sidelight must have been a diy job way back when so it's not a standard size. Several manufacturers said they could not do a custom size sidelight.

I would go to your local landscaping place, and pay a fee to have them look at your front property, and draw up a landscaping plan for you. You dont have to have them do the work. You just need to know what to plant, and where and how. They will tell you all that. You also dont have to do it all at once. You could do it as time, and budget allows. You will have a beautiful front yard in a year or two. If you dont have a planting plan, it sounds like you dont know where to start, so having a plan would be very beneficial to you. Its a cute house.
