Legendary Lime Tree SOS

Hey All

A legendary and fruitful lime tree brings me to request aid from experts to learn

how the tree can be saved, continuing its legacy of of juicy citrus.

See images below. Reader beware.

Long story short, the tree grew growing outwardly, bending away from the structure it was planted next to.Eventually, the weight of the branches and fruits broke snapped the main trunk. However you'll notice some young, green sprigs at the base I'm hopeful will eventually bloom into a full tree once again.

Is this in any way salvageable?

Any advise on how to proceed to save tree from this point forward would be really appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from the community here. Thanks in advance for reading!

support the limbs where they are and your tree will do fine. The branches with leaves with 3 leaflet is rootstock and NEEDS to be removed or it will finish off your fruiting part of your tree.

Can u give a pick of the entire tree? As poncirusguy said, the low growth is not lime, cut it away.

You need to identify and locate the graft union on the tree. It looks high to me, right below the lowest limb. All new growth MUST come from above the graft union. The sprouts below with the dagger like thorns are root stock. Cut them off now. You don't want any of the trees energy going to those thorny sprouts.

The new picture of the whole tree is showing another trunk that is completely shattered and broken off? Where do the two trunks join? Is it above the graft union?

You can probably save the main ascending trunk and possibly the lower branch by removing most of the weight and splinting the break so it can heal. The middle branch is not salvageable.

Basically you need to make clean cuts on everything and regrow the tree from the remaining trunk that is entirely above the graft union.

@Christopher CNC I really appreciat the breakdown. The thorny pests have been removed.

I believe this is the graft. Pardon, I'm a novice, but may just found an interest in the gardening with the resolve to nurture this tree to its full potential. see image below

    is this the graft?

Can you take a closeup of the base of the Legendary Lime. We need to find the graft union. It is looking like it is below the two trunks. That would be good for growing a new tree that you don't let get overly lopsided.

@Christopher CNC Is it the section below, before it bifurcates? see image plz

if that's the location, what would be best practice to move forward?

Very good. That is the graft union. You have plenty of trunk (two) to grow a new tree.

Get some good hand pruners and cut the root stock sprouts at the base flush to the trunk. We want sharp clean tools. Make a clean cut on the trunk with no top. I would be inclined to cut the branching trunk just below the bottom of the window, below the split. I'd cut off the lower branch leaving as much of a branch stub as possible. Keep the thorny root stock spots from growing and leave the tree top alone. Come back next year, let's go for Halloween 2022 and we can discuss selective reduction of the Legendary Limes new growth and bone structure.

Harvest your limes. Find a recipe for freezing the lime juice. Save some for Halloween 2022. In just three or four years we can make you a lime.

@Christopher CNC Done and done! Thank you so much for the info.

With a litle citrus fruit tree fertilizer and a whole lot of resolve the trunks of the tree are looking like gorgoues bouquets.

How do i proceed oh Green Thumb Sage?

    Thank you sir.
