the problem with vines in the compost pile is the woody vine itself .. if it becomes so .... the suggested ID is the grape family ... and they are the worst ..

they take usually take forever to break down ... and make turning the pile near impossible.. unless you really like cussing while you do so ... which in itself can be therapeutic .. lol ...

when i took down some large grape plants.. i made dozens of xmas wreaths out of them.. just by winding them up ... i gave them away to everyone who walked in the yard.. lol .. now that recycling ... lol

Thank you for the help. I only intend to use the leaves, stripped away from the vine in my compost tumbler. In another post, someone thought it might be Virginia Creeper. Does that seem like a good possibility? (on side note, the Latin name is, for me, less helpful than the common name.

It is always possible to cut the vine into smaller pieces before putting on the compost pile.

BTW why you want to get rid of it? The leaves turn a beautiful amber and red in the fall and the berries are a food source for many species of birds. Also, depending where you live, it could be native to your area.

I have an endless supply of leaves, so I'm sure it will continue to flourish. I have limited sources of nitrogen products for the compost tumbler and, as I said, there's quite a lot of it. The vines cover my back fence and come back every year. I agree, it's a beautiful plant.

All soft parts, not just leaves, are fine for composting. When it drops its leaves in autumn use them too.
