So buy a dishwasher and take the bitumen off the tub before installing it.

My LG dishwasher is great❣️No issues.

Maybe search for non-stainless steel dishwashers that are loud and you'll find one without it. I have never noticed this smell with my old (plastic) whirlpool or my current (stainless) samsung.

Use of bitumen adhesive sound deading isn't so recent a thing as the OP may believe.

I have never had this issue and I have Had Bosch or Siemens for a very long time.

Our Bosch 800 dw had an odor the first day it was installed, but not asphalt. It was more like plastic, which i attributed to offgassing. After two run-throughs without dishes, the smell disappeared. No odor since, almost 6 years later.

I have a newer kitchenaid and I have never experienced this.

Have had three Bosch dishwashers in two homes without this issue.

I am particularly sensitive to smells that act as irritants to my throat. I can't wear perfumes, colognes, or use detergents that have scents. Even the dishwashing pods irritate and bother me.

However, my Bosch dishwasher (once I've closed the dispenser on the detergent pod) has never affected me. (I hold my breath whilst I insert the pod.)

I just replaced my newish Kitchenaid (which did not smell) with a Fisher Paykel which also does not smell, but even better, does not leak.

I got a new Bosch last June; no smell whatsoever.

I don’t know if @Lindsay K will return to her thread, but I wonder if the odor she smelled had anything to with bitumen at all. There are several other reasons a new DW may emit a burning rubber smell (see linked article below). I recommend she buy another dishwasher to replace the one she returned - perhaps a Bosch or Miele this time (my Miele is their second-from-the-bottom-of-the-line and cost about the same as several of the KA dishwashers).

Hello Lindsay. I'm in the same position as you. What did you end up purchasing?

I’ve owned three Bosch dishwashers with no problems/ issues of any kind, including odors.

I ended up getting a super inexpensive GE dishwasher. It has the knob you turn instead of buttons, and has no insulation of any kind and just a plastic tub. It did have a plastic smell for the first probably dozen or so washes, but it doesn’t have a smell now…certainly no bitumen anywhere in it.

Originally I had ordered a Miele as I heard very good things about those, but it was backordered for 6 months and when it finally arrived it was badly dented and not usable. We’d have had to start all over waiting for the next shipment, so just gave up and bought this little GE haha. I have heard a lot of people say the nicer Bosches do not have the smell.

Lindsay K didn't state the model number of the selected GE. They don't offer many with a mechanical timer. Seems the only model with a knob and no buttons may be GSD2100? GE says it's no longer being manufactured but Lowes claims to have it available.

Lindsay K - good to hear you went with GE with a plastic tub, that is what I am looking at also. I was so surprised to see it may be a better option for off gassing vs stainless steel that can have Bitumen. Did you look at other GE models of dishwashers with plastic tubs? Is there a reason you went with the knob and no buttons? You mentioned it has no insulation at all? Did you find the insulation in the GE plastic tub dishwashers an issue of off gassing? The stainless tubs I thought were the ones with Bitumen vs the plastic tubs.

My KitchenAid dishwasher does not smell.

Lindsay K, How did you resolve your issue with the dishwasher. I just had a Bosch DW installed yesterday and was shocked at the noxious smell/fumes coming from it while running and when the door is opened after a cycle. I have only run it 3 times so far with soap and no dishes. I started researching and can't believe what I'm learning about bitumen and stainless steel tubs! Would be interested in what you have done about your dilemma since your post.

Liz K, I returned it! They did give me a full refund.

This is my ge. Any dishwasher with a high decibal shouldn’t have bitumen though. They just add it for sound reduction. And yes, it’s still going strong for me. I choose to do an extra rinse cycle, because it seemed one wasn’t washing the detergent off enough.

No problems with my Bosch and I bought it in 2018.

this seems to be an issue with alot of new dishwashers that have Noise reduction, they use bitumen, did these so called engineers actually test them in a home and not in open air setting? with Bosch being the worst. I just got a Bosch series 4 and it stinks of plastic and Bitumen, it has gotten less over the last few days but still stinks and even the dishes smell of bitumen and plastic. How is this acceptable ?

GE #GDF630PSMSS MODEL don't use bitumen. Rather it uses an insulation blanket and insulation mastic.

Bitumen is applied to the outside of the dishwasher. For dishes to "smell of bitumen", bitumen would, somehow, have to sneak its way into the dish compartment, survive two multi-gallon wash cycles including one with detergent, survive the rinse cycle, and adhere to fired, glazed, non-permeable dishware.
