Newly seeded lawn. Am I doing everything right?

Hello everyone,

I’ve dedicated a section of my backyard to make it a small lawn. I want to make sure I did everything right.

I used a rotary cultivator to loosen the soil, then added some Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil. Next I flattened it and used a hand seeder with Scotts Rapid Grass Sun&Shade Mix, covered it slightly with more of the Lawn Soil.

I’ve been watering it twice daily unless it rains. we have cats and they ran through it and ”disturbed”

it in a couple of places (I guess I’ll have to reseed?)

7 days in, this is where we are. Is it where it should be? Why are some areas definitely behind? Any advice?

Brooklyn. Great. That tells me what kinds of grass(es) you don't have.

You can mow a cool season grass when the grass gets up to 5 inches tall. Then mow it back to 4 inches tall or the highest setting on your mower.

should I reseed the areas that have no or less grass or just be patient?

Be patient :-) It takes more than 7 days for lawn seed to germinate fully. If the lawn seed contains much KBG, it could take up to a month.

If you feel you DO need to overseed, wait until early September. Now is not a great time to seed any lawn.

You didn't mention where you live, but I can tell from the pictures you are not in Phoenix. Now is alright to seed bermuda in Phoenix, but it's not a great time anywhere else. It's too hot. However, if you keep it wet enough, you don't have long before the summer heat breaks and then whatever survived should do fine. Reevaluate what you have in early September to see whether to reseed the thin areas.

Rototilling was a bad idea, too. I wish you had written in before you started the project.

I’m in Brooklyn, NY. I know it wasn’t the ideal time to seed, but we had just moved, and we wanted some green.

This is this morning, almost three weeks. it has started to get sturdier, the cable technician walked on it and there was no damage.

How much longer before I start cutting it? I’m just afraid that it’s so thick that being so long it suffocates. Or should I just let it grow longer? By the way, when the time comes, I plan on using a hand mower, the ones you push.

Please advise and thank you!

Update: storm Henri came, it rained for three days, and my beautiful lawn is no longer so beautiful. This is before and after. Should I reseed it all a bit?
