Andersen windows? Think again!

I would discourage anyone from buying Andersen 200 series windows for their home. I purchased over two dozen windows for my new home under the belief these windows would last and perform better than the competitors. After a little over 11 years, I have eight window sashes that are deteriorating. I contacted Andersen and they refuse to accept responsibility to replace them based on their warranty. They stated that "not all their windows come out of the factory with the same standards", therefore I am left responsible for replacing them at my cost. I thought I was getting a premium window from a reliable company. My perceptions were far from reality. I would highly recommend that you consider other manufacturers that stand behind their products. Replacing eight windows in a new home is in my opinion unacceptable. Don't make the same mistake!

How did they get that water damage? I would get a rep out to look at these. Doesn’t look right to me.

Is that exterior vinyl clad? Doesn't really look it. Maybe its because the rot is behind it.

Your issue with andersen is a major reason why I refused to ever get wood windows.

Yes. I wish I had known they would be rotting after 10 years. You can see the paint is still intact, so these windows are defective. Andersen refuses to take responsibility.

They are rotting beneath the covering on the exterior with normal installation.

They have wood frame that is vinyl clad ded on the exterior and sashes are painted on the exterior. I’m not sure why one would think they are getting a premium window when they purchased their entry level product. Pretty sure the warranty is at 10 years.

The Andersen 200 series are second from their bottom of the line, so not their ”premium”. Their Architectural A series and E series are their premium lines. I am not saying you shouldn’t be upset, but prior due diligence should be thorough for such a big ticket item in the home in order to set expectations. There could also be issues with interior humidity that can cause rot over time even with the premium wood-clad lines. I have a few Marvin Ultimates windows facing north in a rough climate. They are about 14 years old and look like the day they were installed.

Heres is how I rank the Anderson windows typically, but price wise this is pretty close.

    A-Series

    E- Series

    Woodwright

    400

    100

and coming in 6th is the 200. The 200 is also the only one that does not come in custom sizes and is new construction only. The options are also very limited. The good thing is these can be bought cheap and it may be cheaper to buy a whole window vs the sashes. I would try being a little more persistent and going for 1/2 knocked off on replacement sashes. Changing out the sashes is pretty simple.

That does suck. Looks like you are in a fairly wooded area as well. Those things not being able to dry out will DEFINITELY speed up their failure.
