hackberry tree releasing warning spray/fume

Hey there! So i am wondering if anyone else notices that the hackbury releases something like a chemical sap spray when you cut it vigorously?… l tried looking up information about it but I haven’t found any anywhere.

Wow this is interesting however I have excellent google-fu and I've only found a few references or encounter reports.

Because I have extensively studied the flora of South Africa, I do happen to know that the African hackberry, Celtis africana, is known as the "white stinkwood" because of the unpleasant odor of the freshly cut wood. I wonder if that is related to your observation. One more fun fact - Celtis are in the hemp family!

Interesting!!! It has made me cough a litte, but I have yet to notice a “stink”…:) I will pay more attention next time.
