Andersen windows estimate

I just received an estimate for 31 windows and 2 / Patio French Doors (2 panel French), for $76,536.85.

Window description:

HP Low-E4
Interior/ exterior: white
Glass: HP Low- E4
No Grills
Standard Hardware
Screen: TrueScene

$117,749 (-35% if paid in cash)= $76,536.85

Thoughts about that estimate would be greatly appreciated.

I assume thes are installed? what ate the details of the installation? when they say cash are we talking a suitcase full of greenbacks? Price sounds kind of high, i would recrecommend getting at least a few more bids.

35% off sounds like the quoted you list price less the typical direct truckload pricing and if this is the case that is nothing spectacular, I too would recommend getting another price. Casements are typically a more expensive window. However without knowing sizing and other specifications it is tough to tell but if that number is high or spot on.

The TrueScene screens are very pricey. I would recommend if budget is an issue to only use it where you really, really want it. Also agree that other bids are needed.

We just replaced 25 windows, two glass doors (single panel) and 3 French doors - with nice wood clad windows (replaced Anderson 100’s). Most were fixed windows (19 of them) and the 6 opening ones were casement. ~$30k (windows only) - removal of old windows - in stucco, so there was a lot of work on the outside and installation averaged about $450 a window. I would definitely get at least one more quote

Your pricing is so cheap your contractor must of lost money. I would love to see both the quality of the window he used and his install. $450 would be well below his costs and considering the inflation that is ravaging the home improvement industry I find it hard to believe he could do it for anywhere close to that figure unless he’s an unemployed eskimo with an addiction to fire water. Let me guess, he works out of a station wagon and also does landscaping?

We did 26 Andersen 400's black/black casement and fixed windows in 2020...some were replacements (in brick or stucco), most were new construction. Most were 5'x5', some smaller, some larger (largest one was a fixed 6x6 which took 3 guys to install). Yes, my husband is a GC so we went through a window broker, and yes he/his crew installed...and yes, we did drywall return...but out price was no where near your quote! Please shop their price and let them know that you are doing it.

PS. Our 8' Pella patio door was around $2600 (uninstalled, blinds built in, wood inside, metal exterior) and the Andersen one was only a few hundred less...the Pella door is so much nicer (we have both kinds now...long story). But I didn't want Pella windows.

Get another quote and maybe look elsewhere. We are living in a house that has Andersson windows installed maybe 15 years ago and the grills are all broken, windows coming off hinges, screens don't work right on doors, etc. The owners are meticulous about care for the house and have always used Andersson on job sites but no longer recommending them. The quality just isn't there anymore. Maybe try Marvin they have a line now to complete price wise with Anderson. There's also Pella. Just make sure you give them the Anderson line you're quoting in so your estimate is the same level quality.

@Andrea - the name of the windows manufacturer is spelled ”Andersen”. Also, while it’s unfortunate that your 15-year-old Andersen windows are so deteriorated, it is a mistake to say that means all Andersen windows are not good quality. We don’t know if the original installation was done poorly - the leading reason why windows have problems. We also don’t know what line of Andersen windows you have. Andersen’s lower-level lines are aimed at homeowners who have a smaller budget. Those windows have shorter warranties, and 15 years for them to wear out is about right. As to your rec of Pella windows, I would put their quality below Andersen’s.

@shannon_wi That's fine if you think they're below it, and maybe their installer wasn't good but out of two houses now Andersen has not lasted and the pellas on one house are from the 80s and still in perfect working order so I would recommend anyone to compare the materials used today and quote multiples out before spending 70k.

@WindowGenius - well, we were paying him by the hour, not by the window - I think it was something like $17k to remove/install the windows. The window mfg guys were up yesterday installing the screens and hardware and commented “whoever put your doors in did a very nice job” - so I guess I’ll go with that comment! (And no, he doesn’t work out of the back of a station wagon - LOL)

I recently got 4 quotes for windows. I needed 16 windows replaced. Andersen's quote was 3 1/2 times more than any other company. It was a short visit. Do yourself a favor and get other quotes.

"Andersen's quote was 3 1/2 times more than any other company. It was a short visit"

What were the other brands? What line of Andersen, was it Renewal by Andersen?

Quotes, without context, are not really that helpful.

Pay it in cash!! Are you kidding???? What reputable contractor is telling you to PAY federal and state taxes on the income you earned, but save HIM from paying taxes on the income HE EARNS? What a jerk!!!! He’s not going to claim that large amount of income which in itself is lying and asking you to participate. I’d RUN, don’t walk away from this shark!!
