Still waiting on microwave in island + window treatment (any suggestions?)

UPDATED with our goals/extra info...

Goals:

  • - A better overall use of the space.
  • - An island for eating, socializing, art projects, homework
  • - Kid-friendly(-er) surfaces: dark lowers, a "mottled" countertop choice to better hide any stains
  • - A bar for my husband's whiskey collection
  • - A friendly/casual feeling overall (not 100% sure if we accomplished this one perfectly. My "inspiration" photos still look better than my final product).

what function is the window treatment to provide...cutting sun and glare.....more a privacy issue...seeking decor treatment???? I like the simplicity of your space.....I dont know your issue but I would want the most minimal treatment. I would probably put a spring tension rod at halfway position inside the window return and sew a slightly gathered sheer with a split so you can get at window handles. You can always do something more extensive later if that isnt enough . Again I dont know what your goal is.

Terrific tranformation! I really like the tile work.

@herbflavor Considering a treatment for a couple reasons: 1) some privacy from our very close neighbors, ah, city living

    1. possible coverage of the top section of the tiling above window. I’ll attach a photo… I don’t love the way the tile is cut up here. I don’t think it’s a mistake, I just wonder if a very simple treatment would look nice, possibly in white? warm wicker color?

amazing transformation, I love your kitchen! Would you mind sharing the color of your white cabinets as well as tile name and color? Thank you

My cordless horizontal blinds broke so I'm also debating the window treatment for my above sink window. Most of my inspo pics have minimal relaxed shade treatments or curtains. Considered solar shades but they offer no privacy at night time. The sheer shades would need lining for privacy. Can't find anything that beats blinds for dual privacy and light control though.

@jonnyt the cabinets are ultracraft. Uppers/bar: Melted Brie (a warm white). Lowers/island: Pepper (a warm brown-gray). countertop: Cambria Malvern (vanilla w white and gray splashes.

I chose a dark lower color and a “mottled” countertop bc of young kids… figured they’d be more stain-resistant and so far no complaints!

@tartanmeup I love that first option. I wonder how I’d install that over tile 🤔

Thank you. Just came home with more tiles trying to find something that works. I have white dove cabs with a grey counter and I really want to do a splash similar to yours…so hard to find the right tile color

Oh sorry forgot to mention, tiles are fireclay in “bone” I think. Fireclay has a ton of white options. They are made to order and can be expensive, certain sizes - like the 2x6s i got - are less expensive.

Beautiful! Where did you put the microwave? Can you post a pic?

Wow! you did a beautiful job! I love it!

I'm not a fan of the "after". Did you design it yourself?

I love the look of the relaxed roman shade and you can do that with a tension rod. Love the brightness of your new kitchen. Enjoy!

Wow, I love it! What a transformation!!

Thanks, all. You’re all invited for wine & cheese. Except you @strategery 🤪🤪🤪 Yes, to keep costs down, I did choose the finishes and have no experience in that area. Many decisions I made remotely and yeah, if I had a time machine I’d probably make some changes. But, it’s working so much better for our family, so we’re happy!

Oh, the microwave is in the island, directly across from the oven.
