First bloom and nature

Olfactory Evidence opened its first bloom today. This scape is short, the next scape is at least twice as tall.

I received a daylily from Laura last season that she says was identified incorrectly, so it is a noid at this point. I really like the bloom on it, the throat is orange although the photo looks more yellow. The rest of the bloom color is very close to reality. This one started blooming this week.

Autumn Minaret started blooming about two weeks ago, too early for this one. It is always a bloom machine. I counted 48 scapes today. It has had over 800 blooms on its best season, per my one time calculation.

I managed to catch mother nature at work this week….a blue swallowtail and a humming bird. My goal for the rest of the season is to capture a better photo of this little bird, so elusive. I have a pair nesting somewhere in my trees. It is rare for most people this far north to see them very often, I see them almost every day.

I really like the colors on the NOID! I'm surprised Laura couldn't ID it for you. Does Olfactory Evidence have a wonderful smell that lives up to its name? Great photos of the butterfly and hummingbird!

You know I do adore a good yellow so I like Olfactory Evidence. I agree with Debra about the colors on your unknown-so pretty! Don’t you love watching hummers? I have feeders outside the windows in our den and we enjoy them more than TV!!!!

You have some lovlies, Sherry. Love that butterfly! Autumn Minaret is a very nice display and your NOID is a lovely bloom. I can see why you like it.

Wow that is a beautiful clump of Autumn Minaret. Does it increase quicly? Looking for something like that for an area near the house but not in the gardenbed. I'm a big fan of getting pics of butterflies and the hummers. We have hummers here and each day it goes for the agastache kudos Mandarin. The Lobelia cardinalis queen victoria started blooming here a few days ago and it goes for that as well.

The NOID is beautiful. One day you'll find out the name I'm sure.

RE: A Swallowtail story: ...........We aren't very close to the Monarch annual routes, so planting milkweed was not productive for us. However, we do have the Swallowtails come through here with regularity so have taken to planting parsley over the years for them to eat. They have already devoured our small patch of it. So, we went to a box store the other day to renew our supply since the butterflies are still on the move. We saw that the box store parsley plants were also being devoured by swallowtail caterpillars. We only found 2 scrawny parsley plants that still had green on them which we brought home and planted. The next day we had a "V-8" moment (old commercial wherein people slap their forehead after eating/drinking junk food/drinks and say "Wow, I could have had a V-8"). Why didn't we bring the caterpillars home with us so they could pupate in our yard? That's why we are buying the parsley anyway!?! It was a V8 moment for sure..............On daylilies I like the NOID (wouldn't you just know it) and Autumn Mineret is always a sight to see this late in the season...................Maryl

Julia, Autumn Minaret increased well here. An added bonus with this plant that I see with other late blooming plants of all kinds, the foliage looks good all season.

The NOID looks like Flying Trapeze to me. Itblooms rather late for me in my PA garden.
