Certainteed Cedar Impressions 5" sawmill shingles

Has anyone else who has used these polymer shingles on their homes had subsequent problems with the shingles bowing, warping and distorting? My contractor installed this product to replace 1960s aluminum siding on my 101 year old house in Massachusetts in February and March 2021. Once the weather warmed up in April dimensional changes began to occur. Initially individual shingles were affected but by the end of May entire rows of shingles were bowing out. The contractor is saying the problem is the product, while Certainteed initially said the problem was the installation. A field representative from Certainteed has removed some of the offending shingles for testing to determine if the batch is defective. I'm still waiting for Certainteed's verdict.

Typically I have seen things like that from installation, normally too tight (vinyl loves to move). Winter install would mean the siding was at its smallest size.

This is what the siding looks like after 9 months. Certainteed says that the product it removed tested "within spec." Though I can confirm that the contractor did not install the product according to Certainteed's printed instructions, the contractor has not offered anything more than band-aid solutions to the problem.

I'm sorry, that looks pretty awful. We have those exact shingles on an accent part of our home (tiny dormers in our gable roof) and we have some sun fading but everything still is aligned and tight.

If the contractor didn't install them to specification, then it sounds like they are liable, but I'm not sure how you hold them to it except to file in small claims?

Could you tell me what the substrate was that the Certainteed shingles were attached to on your project?

Janice Hodson unfortunately I don't recall and the quote I have here didn't specify a method. I believe it was basic 'new' construction - they framed it out and probably put up plywood sheathing and black paper.
