If you live in a location where there are high level landscaping/garden centers or landscape architects, that's where I would try first. I sold my neighbor's gorgeous weeping dwarf Japanese maple for $550 to a landscaping and design firm. Put notices out soon so that they can be thinking out it until it's time to dig.

Nextdoor offers were laughable here.

its value is what some rube is willing to pay ... a great plantsman once told me there are a lot of people with too much money.. and not much sense ... lol ...

gal and rhiz'z friends understand the value of a specimen like that ... as well as know how to dig it up and move it successfully .. probly because they would offer to be standing there supervising.. im sure they are much to smart to volunteer to do the work.. lol ...

do understand... that an 8 foot tree would need a 3 or 4 foot rootball... dug for ball and burlap ... leaving you an 6 to 8 foot hole ... then they have to figure out how to lift that dead weight out of the hole.. and presumably lift it on a truck or trailer ... big equipment helps here ... and thats presuming you have the soil that will make a root ball.. my sand wont ... it would amount to bare rooting an 10 foot tree and thats just not going to be successful ...

expect to just remove it ... and be mildly surprised if someone wants to pay you for it ...

make sure you know where all your utilities are when allowing strangers to dig big holes near your foundation ...

I know someone who had a gorgeous garden and when he went to move the local reputable nursery offered him thousands (like, tens of thousands, I believe) of dollars to come dig stuff up (kind of ironic since he bought a lot of it there lol). I'm sure they were taking the more unusual and exotic things but still I thought it was kind of wild.

Rhodies take well to being cut back. My neighbor's rhodies get well over 12 feet high and every few years he whacks them back to about 4 feet (always a shock when he does that lol!) Someone could easily cut your rhodie back by more than half to dig it up knowing it will grow back fairly quickly. The rootball may still be big but supposedly rhodies have shallow roots, no? Perhaps you'd even like to move it to another spot yourself?
