Ferns for long narrow planter

I don't like planting straight rows of things but my brick planter is a challenge. I need suggestions for different ferns I can use in this north-facing narrow brick planter. The gardenias I planted in the spring did not survive my overwatering! I need something easier and evergreen. I'm thinking of autumn ferns. Is there something I can plant between them to break up the row and make it more interesting? In another location, I have an Aralia which died back to the ground and is very slow to return. It's planted between two Autumn ferns and makes a nice contrast. I'm wondering if Aurelia would be too hard to keep at a shorter height.
