Those uppers look really heavy; dwarfing your windows and looming over everything. Have you found a pro to do the job? You can really mess it up if you DIY. I would consider removing all the cabs around the fridge and the ones flanking the windows. You'll get a much more open and airy look without them. Then decide about paint/stain.

The finish of your cabinets is great. I would consider switching the crown to a more simplistic profile. Not sure how that works with matching your current finish though. If the goal is to brighten the space I would focus on a different countertop color and light, full-height backsplash.

While your cabinets are tall, they appear to be in very good condition. Having the cabinets professionally painted in a light color would lighten and brighten the kitchen. A lighter-color counter would help, too. I would reduce the empty zone above the window with a floral fabric valance or a piece of art (under glass for protection). And I would add an area rug or two for additional interest.
You don’t have much prep space unless you use the kitchen table. Do you have space for a counter-height rolling cart with a butcherblock work surface?

Perhaps try removing some of the upper cabinets and then adding shelves in place of them. You also might try replacing the countertops with something lighter and getting a light backsplash.
