help with backsplash DILEMMA

I had new countertops and backsplash put it. Backsplash too busy. I was thinking maybe I should resurface cabinets in light gray and add black pulls. What do you think?

I would leave the cabinets white. Change the hardware.

I think change the cabinet knobs to black and also a different color shade for the window to draw the eyes up, like a weathered grey. Something that compliments floor and backsplash colors. On one of the counters consider adding a nice size grey/white wood tone bowl to break up busy wall. I think it looks really nice though and you'll come to like it more as you add your own personal accents.

You expressed concern re backsplash being busy-seems that should be the focus of your changes. Agree it is very very busy. Resurfacing cabinets would be so expensive and not solve the problem imo. Best wishes

Thank you. What color for the outlet covers?

Agree the hardware being black would help bring the design together. And something on the window in dark gray.

You might consider looking at other outlet covers and buy a few to see what looks best. Perhaps a stainless look like the dish washer, or the faucet, or black, grey or color of grout. See what looks more fitting in the space.

It's not just the outlet cover though - it's the whole piece or you'd have the white inside with the dark outer plate which would add even more contrast. I'd just change the knobs to black and put a few strategically placed white items on the countertop.

Nothing will fix this except taking out the backsplash.

Sorry but new hardware and outlets is not going to fix the issue of the backsplash. its bothering you and thats not going to go away.

It's a bossy backsplash! Dark grout did not help it. Do you love it enough to change everything else in the kitchen? Probably not, the easiest solution is to redo it.

I would change out the backsplash, as it is too busy.

I decided I am going to change the backsplash. My cabinets are bisque, not white. Any recommendations for tile color? I was thinking of a light gray. You people are great!

I’d match the cabinets. you have enough grey in the countertops and flooring, it seems. could become grey overload.

Agree to avoid more gray. Choose a simple shaped tile the same color as your cabinets, with matching grout.

Your cabinets are traditional in style and a less dramatic backsplash in a uniform color would look better, in my opinion. Your cabinets are bisque and your countertop looks cool in tone so it may be difficult to find the right white. Would you consider a solid green or blue backsplash in a ceramic or glass tile? Also, changing the hardware to something other than white would be a big improvement.

    What color is your floor?

Definitely not gray. Your cabinets are a warm color and gray backsplash would not compliment that.

That's too bad you are going to rip out a nice splash. I think it looks awesome. Your kitchen actually looks unfinished. Do you keep anything on the counters? Before doing anything , I would put all your stuff back out and live with it for a month. Sometimes when things are so new, it can take a minute to get used to it.

I for one would hate to see another kitchen with subway tile that matches the cabinets!

Beth has given you excellent advice...

Take some time to think it over before making a hasty decision.

I personally like the backsplash. I would not make any hasty decisions, as others have suggested, to live with it for awhile. If you start introducing contrasting color hardware then I think you will really be looking at a busy kitchen. Keep everything else neutral in color and your backsplash can shine. Make your backsplash the intentional focal point and everything else can fade away.

make the other changes first. they're cheaper.

removing that tile and putting in some other dull gray isn't going to do anything better. it's just going to cost you more money and more mess.

do the hardware, the blind, the outlets, the pendant light and the rug first. If you still hate it, then you can tackle the tile.

At the very least, do hardware, outlets, and a runner in front of sink. the mini-blind is really bad, so I'd do everything to change out that too. last can be the pendant.

You shared only one wall with the backsplash, is that all of it? If so, I think you can make it work, just give it time and make the other improvements the Pros recommend.

Carolae, I am getting exausted from trying to decide what to do. I'm afraid of making another decorating mistake. The tiles are glass. I was thinking of that trying to find the right off white. I don't know about blue or green. I appreciate everyone help.

Jackowskib, I have two walls with backsplash.

Diann, maybe you should show the entire space with more photos, it may make a difference on what Pros suggest is best course to take. I'm going through the same self inflicted turmoil doing our bath reno, so I know how you are feeling. I learned a big lesson that next time I take on a project I've never done I will first invest in the services of a professional interior desiger to guide me properly. Sales people in the stores offer all kinds of free advise, but buyer beware! I thought my shower floor tile looked awful after it was installed and had them rip it out so I could get something else, an expense I didn't need! Could have lived with it but don't want the daily reminder that I could have made a better choice. But please show the Pros the entire space and you may find the inspiration you need to pull the entire space together. The tiles are very nice, and may still have a chance to add a nice appeal to your space. It is the show stopper afterall. Good luck to you!

Here is a more complete photo of my kitchen. Pardon the mess.

Obviously quite a different kitchen, but I believe it does have bisque colored cabinets. I think the bright white tile, rather delicate stainless hardware, and colorful window treatment is another option to consider.

OTOH, the black accents on the OP's appliances may fight with this option - it would help to mock it up.

Here is a photo of the bathroom. I rather like the colors here.

I know you’re frustrated but please try the inexpensive changes first. In seeing the whole kitchen, I’m wondering if painting the walls above the cabinets in a deeper gray would help balance the colors in the backsplash. @Beth H? What do you think? Be careful with glass tiles. They can “change color” once they’re installed.

The backsplash is a black and white modern look. your kitchen cabinets are not. the countertops are busy enough on there own. the fight between the two is throwing you off. sorry but again, little changes aren’t going to fix this.
