Help with Annabelle Hydrangeas

I planted three Annabelle hydrangeas last fall and when they first bloomed in the spring, they all looked great with big white blooms. Over the course of three months, two of them have stopped growing while the other one on the end is huge! There is a Japanese maple tree next to the ones that are doing poorly, but it doesn’t provide a whole lot of shade and I do water them when needed. I live in Charlotte, which is zone 7. Can anyone give me their thoughts as to what might be going on here and what I can do to remedy it?

Can't see clearly, but they look like maybe they were bitten off earlier in the year.

About three months ago, they all got chewed up by slugs, but I acted quick and got rid of them.

It looks like there are a number of bare stubs where branches should be, Maybe rabbits took over when the slugs were done. Next year, protect them until they are too tall for critters to chew on.

Watch out for those pesky wabbits and deer. There could be other pests nibbling on the roots; or those two small ones may just be slow growers with a smaller root system. Feel free to give them a tad more fertilizer in the spring 2022 than you give to the big one (do it after your average date of last frost - last week in April for Charlotte). Maybe also check that they are getting enough water to get the soil moist down to a depth of 8".
