Concerning Forbid and possible phytotoxicity on some roses:

"Judo 4F/Forbid 4F This is the first of a new miticide/insecticide class, the tetronic acids, with a unique mode of action inhibiting lipid biosynthesis. The active ingredient is spiromesifen, in IRAC group 23 (Inhibitors of acetyl CoA carboxylase). Judo, marketed by OHP, is labeled for use on greenhouse and nursery ornamentals to control spider, tarsonemid, teniupalpid, and eriophyid mites as well as whiteflies including the difficult-to-control Qbiotype Bemisia tabaci. Forbid is marketed by Bayer Environmental Science for outdoor landscapes. Some phytotoxicity has been reported on impatiens, Peperomia, Dracaena, some roses, and geranium (Pelargonium spp) as well as others; use on ferns, English ivy, alstroemeria, Mexican heather, croton, fuchsia, Schefflera, Cordyline is not recommended. See the Judo label and Technical Bulletin at http://www.ohp.com for a list of sensitive plants. Labels carry a CAUTION signal word and the REI is 12 hr. Activity is reportedly faster than some growth regulators but slower than ‘knock down’ miticides. Have been using Forbid successfully for a good while … it last longer than avid. Avid I use as an “in between” spray when RRD FEARED. White flies got me last fall, Ben suggested Forbid so I sprayed Forbid earlier year and no white fly. NOTHING got rid of them last year. I think changing my forbid spray schedule is the reason.

Over the years one or two of my most sheltered roses (in the backyard, behind a tall board on board fence, in back of other roses) got RRD while some far more exposed roses did not. I’ve read that fences and windscreens can help deter RRD somewhat, but that’s not been my personal experience…I’ll stick with FORBID.

I do think that removing an infected rose will very likely prevent its neighbors from getting infected. That’s worked out quite well.

Agree Forbid has made the most difference and cut down drastically the occurrence of RRD in my garden. Since I adjusted my Forbid spray schedule to coincide with when some other pest occur I have not had thrips etc. and even avoided the white fly that invaded me last year.

I plan on moving to Austin or Houston sometime this fall and it is breaking my heart to leave my roses. I am sure they will be replaced with a swimming pool.

Yikes, Austin, why would you leave your cherised home in University Park? I know you’ve been there a long time and it holds great sentimental value for you, beyond that beautifully tended rose garden.

Yes I have lived here since 2005 moved from Houston. My daughter is moving to Austin and son lives in Houston. Makes no since for a 77 yr old widow to live 4 hours away from family and lifetime friends who are also in H… those that are still alive and still have it mentally. Old age not for the weak, gotta be strong to handle it…

I think it was easier when we died younger and still intact but certainly not easier on those who love us that we leave behind.

Two of my roses got rid, they were in full sun in the front yard. Then 2 in the back yard which j had just gotten this spring as bare root(both Weeks roses)..above all and petite prince got it too.. I am so sad. Never had RRD and now all of a sudden seeing 4.

hey puriisa- I highly, highly suggest Forbid. It is not one of the really bad guys and does not kill lady bugs. It solved all my problems. Research on its side... just do not use more than 21 day apart and I alternate with Avid when I feel need... Avid also does not hurt lady bugs.

If you are no-spray then it could be a continuing problem once it starts or that is my experience. Good luck. RRD is horrible.
