I can only make a suggestion about the rug. IMO The problem with a rug over a rug is that it is a safety concern. It may cause bunching of the rug and therefore a risk for falling for the person walking on it. If you must have an area rug, it must be the lowest nap possible (1/4" or lower). A rug over a rug means that you have the movement of the top rug over the movement of the bottom rug - not the safest, to say the least. If you have children, elderly, or disabled, this becomes even more of a problem because they don't have the same ease of mobility as others.

I agree with rnonwheels. If you do end up keeping it in it’s current spot I would move the plants, they seem very squished up against the tv console.

Your carpet is nice, and I would skip adding a rug. I think your room is good without it.

I like your inspiration pics. I think a gallery wall would look nice there. Since that wall is in direct view from the front door and is the entry view, I don’t think I would put a bookcase right there, but rather a very slim bench or just the gallery of art by itself.

I like the idea off a gallery wall, but no furniture. It will crowd the TV. The wall by the door would be a good place for art over a bookshelf.

RE: rug: I have a second living area that I decided to add "color pop" into. I added an area rug on top of the carpet and it made all the difference in injecting color and unifying elements within the space, as well as the window coverings and pillows I made. It does "creep", but only because there is no furniture actually on it. I searched and searched for the right rug that wasn't too busy, but had my orange accent color and I like it so much.

RE: TV: as it is now, it seems in a rather odd spot. You may have reasons for it, but I would move it to the wall across from the sofa. And, it can be easily mounted on the wall. Or at least, angle it in the corner on a table. Or swap out, so the coffee table is now the TV table, and that narrow credenza is your sofa "coffee table".

Or, move the TV where that recliner is, installing it at an angle across the corner. I personally would consider that option.

Also, consider you don't need the sofa along a wall. Consider your sofa a "moveable wall" that doesn't have to be up against a wall. It can direct traffic behind it and out of your living area. Try moving it around, away from walls and see if it can make your room function better.

It can be positioned perpendicular to the wall it's on now, moved forward with its back to the stairs so entering from the front door you are walking behind the sofa; this will direct traffic along the walls to another room and not crossing the middle of your living space. You can then make your "recliner end" of the room your TV /bookcase/picture wall area and work that all out.

RE: Wall next to outside door: That would be a great space for a 4' tall bookshelf and pictures above, if you decide to keep everything in its place as it is now.

Thank you for all of the feedback. The reason the TV is t kn the big wall is that my husband needs to be able to see it from the recliner. its a little toght with the recliner by the steps. I appreciate the repositioing the plants- good point! And about the rug safety tip- But i have to say that I LOVE your area rug alwaysdesigning!!

TV on the sofa wall where it won't be the first thing guests see. Sofa & art on the long wall where they will be more welcoming when people enter. Lounger angled right where it is.

I would put the 2 plants beside each other on that empty wall wall cross from the coffee table

I was gonna say to put the TV across from the coffee table Or to the right of the door is the door opposite your husband's chair but you want it this way

Perhaps try flipping the TV to where the sofa currently is and then placing the sofa on the empty wall. We wouldn't recommend a rug on the carpet however once you place the TV where the sofa is you can add tall plants on either side of the TV and console.
