countertop color

We are remodeling our kitchen. I ordered black GE Cafe appliances and all cabinets will be painted white and a medium stained wood floor. My family is telling me to do white with gray veins quartz countertops but my husband thinks we should do black. Also what color should we paint the back of the bar area?

I would do the white and paint that bar back your kitchen wall color. will you be adding an overhang with the new counter top on it? It is so big it seems like it needs one and a couple stools on that right side of the pic.

White cabinets with black counters is sharp and classic and will never go out of style. Unlike grey-veined white quartz. If you don't want to do solid black, you can look into something like Virginia Mist (aka Jet Mist) granite or soapstone.

large enough kitchen you could do a couple things.......two different materials...bar and perimeter. search for a medium dark material with some grays and some browns/ neutrals with movement for the island..then a whitish solid surface/corian for perimeter. Note the wood trim at windows and you will have wood floor and along w black appliances and grayish carpet . or a patterned granite everywhere with neutrals and some gray/black would be really nice. I think the right granite with some movement would be a nice pick. Have you searched your local stone yard to see granite availability ??? Its hard to tell what style you will end up with regards hardware and since [ furnishings arent shown] but consider facing the back of island w bead board or something you could stain OR paint and then youd have options once counters are in. the advice thrown your way regarding veined marble look counter or all black I think is ho hum...the right granite w some movement [ dont have to go w dramatic piece] I think would work well if you searched .

Since this room opens up to the living room and dining room you need to work with the style and colors in the other rooms. (Make everything harmonize).

You also didn't mention a backsplash. Are you going with a 4" splash or will you be going with a splash all the way to the bottom of the cabinets?

Personally, with the black appliances, I would not do black countertops. It would be too stark and dramatic and would make decorating the other rooms too difficult. They will need to be equally as dramatic.

I agree that we need to see what is going on adjacent to the kitchen. Black countertops require alot of maintence IMO,.

Thanks for the ideas I sure appreciate it. We will go with a backsplash and we’re thinking white subway tiles. I still have to buy bar stools and hardware for the cabinets etc. We just moved into the home and it needs all remodeled. The room adjacent to the kitchen is the dinning room which I need new furniture in there also. I want to run wood floors thru out the Mai floor.

you may have 7.5 foot ceiling height it appears.I would probably paint the walls a neutral off white. the walls appear gray . painting is always of benefit and upon taking possession, right away gives a big payoff as you look the space over and plan things. Back to granite as a choice: a lightish selection w some movement would be flattering I think. If the fan over the table remains I'd replace the blades w cream or white..can they be painted? look into that. I'm not keen on fans over tables / we took one out but if it serves your purposes just lighten the look anyway.

Honestly, I don't think I'd do either. Black sounds too harsh/contrasty and grey vein quartz sounds like you're just answering to a trend and not with what works best with your kitchen.

Take a freshly painted cabinet door, a sample of flooring, and a piece of hardware with you to the countertop showroom. See which countertop works nicely with the elements of the space. Get some countertop samples that work and then bring them back home and judge them *in* your space. Let the design elements be the guide here.

    Good luck!

You will have a LOT of black in a relatively small space, and a major black/white contrast between appliances and cabinetry. Do the counters in a light solid color, neither black nor white. Veining has become common. Paint the outside of the bar and the kitchen walls the same color.

We might suggest going with stainless steel appliances and not doing a black countertop. Your kitchen already looks a bit dark so if going with white cabinets, white subway tile, and and a medium stained floor we might go light on the countertops as well. Below are some of our kitchen designs to aid you with your dilemma.
