It’s a nice-looking room! I like the furniture. Point by point:

a) Nothing there, because of doors. I don’t think it looks empty. If anything, maybe a plant?

b) A colorful framed art he loves.

c) Pillows, throws, art.

Things you didn’t ask about (forgive me):

Larger rug, so it goes under legs of sofas.

Are there any floor outlets? If so, a lamp on the end table.

Can you show the rest of the room?

I help my dad with his house, too, and love putting my touch on it. It’s easy because we love the same things. :)

A new coffee table ? Really with reclining sofas a coffee table is pretty useless . Some good lighting like lamps for instance . The mantel is really uninspiring so maybe some color . I would look at a much more colorful rug and use a color from it for something on the mantel , please no clocks ever in a space where you entertain.

I was thinking a plant also or moving the one behind his chair...it’s huge though.
We are thinking along the same lines with the art on mantle.
I believe placement of the rug is correct as turning it would only allow for one couch to be on it.
Rug change. I may move it to the dining area instead and search for something with more color.

Do pillows look awkward on leather? For some reason, I always thought they appeared odd on leather...would throws be a suitable alternative?

Thank you, Patricia. Dad is from a generation where there is ALWAYS a clock and he prefers not to stare at his phone. There is actually a decorative one on the coffee table now, so the mantle one will be leaving. A compromise of sorts :-)

More pics. If you cannot tell yet, he loves brown. I am trying my best to break it up. A new rug should help me quite a bit, I hope.

Remove the torchiere lamps on the side table. They are too large and detract from the artwork. No coffee table. Most reclining sofas have a built in beverage holder between seats. If not, narrow side tabe(s) maybe in a rustic white farmhose finish to break up the brown. (I like to refer to so much brown as “chocolate”).

Paint the room to highlight the recess on the ceiling. Nice potted tree next to the side door. Floor length lamp added.

Aging eyes need more light so add whatever general and task lighting you can. If he is happy in the space - your job is done!

So is this a good plan?

Find new rug, a few pillows (he hates too many pillows), art for mantle, plant in front of window, plantation shutters, new end tables, and some sort of end table for his recliner chair with task lighting added.

My question....there are NO floor outlets. How do I handle the (future new) end tables next to the couch? Cordless lamps are not a common find, nor very attractive as far as I can tell. Dad is mid-70s, so I prefer to avoid exposed extension cords.

The current rug is a 9 X 13. How large do I need to go -- to behind the couch, correct?

Because the back of the two seater appears to be in view from the entrance, and the back is not very attractive, i would scoot the whole seating area further towards the fireplace and place a console table with a few attractive and colorful ”things” behind that sofa. You might then find the need to scoot the tv down the wall towards the fireplace as well. hopefully those reclining seats do not recline backwards, but rather slide forward (wall huggers, I believe theyre called).
