Sink hole in backyard

Any suggestions on how to fix. A hole just appeared in my back yard, about 6' down is a metal pipe appears broken (not utility) 4' diameter. This is 1st house built here. The city engineers don't have suggestions. Any recommendations on fixing ?

4' diameter? As in a 4-FOOT diameter broken horizontal metal pipe going toward the house?

If that's not a typo, it sounds like a very large storm sewer or culvert of some kind.

If you are in a city, the city should have utility maps, but I guess if the city engineers had no idea what it was, then it's not a known utility line. It seems very odd to build a house on top of any kind of a pipe that big.

If the site was filled in before construction, it could be a piece of scrap pipe that came in with the fill.

Are you in a sink-hole prone area? Horizontal or vertical pipe? Does the soil on the sides and at the bottom of the hole seem fairly firm when prodded with a pole?

No its to close to house and pipe to large for septic tank

I'm not in a sink hole area. It's like a trench. Horizontal pipe. If saying from house. Its at least 8' deep and 8' going towards house under deck. Haven't checked the other way. I have a call into DNR at this point they are checking to see if it's something they can look into.

If the sink hole is determined to be stable, the remedy I've seen is to fill it with gravel to about 18" below the surface and top it off with soil. Then plant grass.

We ended up with a sink hole in our backyard (the day before closing-we were the sellers) and it turned out to be the holding tank from the septic had collapsed. If you don't have septic, maybe an old one?
