Yes, I would add a rug, or one on top of the other for interest. Why do you want the desk to look bigger? I like more space than furniture, but that's me. I wonder if you put it on the diagonal if that would make it look bigger? Do so and take a picture. Compare the two. Mirror the rugs on that diagonal as well to give the room a unified and cohesive look. If the chair you have is comfy, stick with that.

Nothing is well proportioned, really. DRAW the space, with window, closet, door etc and add all the appropriate dimensions. A 42 inch desk is a lousy work space, and no.......do not waste money on an executive desk chair, to go with what is essentially a childs desk for homework:.

Post a drawing with dimensions if you are serious about wanting a convenient, good looking office. One that functions : )

If you only need a small desk, I think a better location could help resolve the problem of its size/awkwardness. If you are willing to move things around, can you show entire room and advise dimensions.

The desk size is okay, but I agree with the above poster that a rug would add a great deal to this room -- specifically color and warmth.

I am a fan of putting things caddy corner and that might do the trick. Adding a rug would make the space cozy

The desk looks to not be very comfortable to sit at that computer for very long. Maybe adding a more comfortable chair would fill out the room and would certainly be more comfortable. It looks like a place that you might sit to use the computer only if you had to. It does not look invitingly comfortable, at all. It looks nice, but not a place you want to linger. Maybe up the comfort factor.

That poor potted plant in the corner looks like a prisoner in a dungeon waiting to die. Being that it looks brown and ragged, I suspect that it is a real living thing, but probably not for very long.

A rug is nice but it will not add inviting comfort.

I, for one, love the sparse and spare and uncluttered room, but this one lacks comfort.

Pretty little room, though.

As Jan said, it is not appropriate for an executive type of chair, but really something more comfortable. There are other choices.

Personally, if all you have there is a lap top computer, I would get rid of the desk for that single thing and put in a nice big easy chair or some other soft seating, and a side table. It seems that the only purpose of the desk is for the computer as there are no visible drawers and it is the only thing there.

If you have a nice comfortable place to sit it would open the room up for more purposes than just a few minutes at the computer.

Do you want it to look sharp and professional to visitors? Who do you want to impress? On Zoom or in person? The desk is too small to look like it's in full time use, but there are businesses where desks are used only a bit. For those, it would be fine to add a big rug.

A good size for a full time desk is 30 by 60 inches. A nice executive chair would be useful.
