landscaping advice

Hello! I’m not sure I’m even posting this in the correct place, but I’m hoping to get some landscape design advice. We have a 1970s fixer that we’ve been working on for 2 years.
We painted the house and did some updates, but now we need some landscape design ideas for the front. We live in central VA north of Richmond. Zone 7. The fescue out front is not doing well in the full sun so I want to do some type of island on either side. Was thinking of crepe Myrtles but I really don’t know where to begin. Also. Should I have landscaping in front of the front porch area? Any suggestions with names of plants would be greatly appreciated.

You're in the right place. Good job providing needed information. But, is that a circular drive you have in a much larger front yard? Full frontal pictures from street side will be wanted, If what I am seeing is correct, a circular drive, that changes a lot about the approach to your landscape. Plus your front porch is not conducive to flowerbeds across the front. You have a walk off porch.

    LOVE the transformation!!
    Looks beautiful!!
    I’m no pro-
But I think I’d do planters on the porch. And landscaping on the walkway.
If you want some privacy or some landscaping maybe you can do boxwoods on the sides of the porch almost to create a “railing”
    Made a quick mock-up 🤭🤭
    Hope it’s clear

Hi Christopher. Thank you so much for taking the time to look at my picture and provide suggestions! Yes. We have a large circular drive with an island that we are going to address next. I didn’t want to ask too many questions at once. Lol. I want to make that low maintenance, mostly trees and shrubs and ground cover but I’m open to ideas on that as well.

Thank you HU. I like the idea of trees on either side of the walkway. Was thinking of lining the walkway with crepe myrtles. We used to love in Georgia and that was a great go to tree! However, our grass is such an issue. Should have put zoyzia or a warm weather grass but I’m done with dealing with the grass I want landscaping to take over that area.

Right side of yard is 24 wide x28 long. Path is 4x28. Left side of tears when facing house is 35 wide to tree line and 25’ from front porch to parking g area that has gravel base and has been taken over by weeds.
Huge front island is 36 wide at widest part and 76’ long. Hope this additional Info and pics help.

A landscape designer’s advice is needed …. someone to make an ON SITE visit to your home to assess all variables .

Please consider planting natives. A landscape designer could help with that. There are several nurseries in the Richmond area that have native plants and even more totally native nurseries up here in Northern Virginia if you feel like a drive.

Sometimes, nurseries near you will give advice on plants and pairings for your zone. I would start with two tall charcoal or black pots
on each side of the front door with colorful annuals. I would also hang a large pretty pendant light over front door. Crape Myrtles are gorgeous
As you mentioned. Your home is in a beautiful setting!
