Stick with neutral colors on big ticket items. Bring color in with paint, fabrics & accessories. Think long term on your big ticket items like counter tops, back splash. These are not items you tend to change for years. Just food for thought.

By chrome appliances do you mean actual chrome, or stainless steel? Please, stay away from stainless. It shows the print of every finger that touches it and is a constant maintenance nightmare -- something the appliance store will not tell you about. Stainless migrated from restaurant kitchens to give home kitchens a more upscale, commercial look. But, someone forgot to notice that in restaurant kitchens every surface gets wiped down every day -- why would you want to buy into that much work?

The best color for appliances and fixtures is white. Not only is it absolutely neutral, it is the most adaptable (no matter what color scheme you pick in the future, white will work with it), and the most sell-able (white is almost every buyer's first or second color choice, and it offends no one). Remember avocado and harvest gold, those must-have colors of the 1980s? Seen any around lately? Today's au courant colors will be equally out of date in 5-10 years.

I have been designing and building kitchens for over 40 years, and would have no appliance color in my personal kitchen but white.

With white appliances, and a neutral wood or whitish cabinets, I think gray and yellow would be absolutely stunning.
