Will the ribbed glass shade on this pendant project a light pattern?

After hunting forever I've narrowed down my pendant light choices to these two. The one on the left is the Generation Lighting Pratt Street Pendant and the one on the right is the Lyanna 1 - Light Single Dome Pendant. I want these pendants to function as task lighting over my island, but also just the general ambient kitchen light, so I wanted a glass shade that would let the light shine all around rather than be directed down only. I'd originally wanted a style just like the one on the left, but with a frosted glass like that on the right. I'm not finding that in stock anywhere except in sizes that are larger than I want (and twice as expensive). I really prefer the frosted glass shade but love the metal cage-like detail on the lamp with the ribbed glass. I'm wondering if the ribbed glass is going to cause the light to shine in a pattern on the ceiling? I really just want a soft overall light. I'm not looking for artistic effect.

Anyone with any experience on this know what it will do?

I have two of the left side picture. As you can see there isn’t a pattern on the ceiling. I’ve used all different bulbs over the years I’ve had these. Right now each is lit with two 3000K 810 lumen LED bulbs, with dimmer when needed. I read and wash dishes under them.

The general lighting from the recessed cans will fill in a lot but if you have those on by themselves they will create a pattern.

I think you are trying to get two opposite functions from the same lamp..task lighting and overall lighting are more likely to work with a clear shade..but the metal pieces are more likely to cast a shadow than the lines in the glass…i would suggest dimmers on the light as a possible solution to shadows that may only show at nite

@palimpsest, we can only get canned lights along the perimeter of the kitchen. We’re going to do a coffered dropped panel over the island for the pendants but DH thought canned lights there would be over kill. He was talking about doing some string lights along the perimeter of that which will light the ceiling and provide a little extra ambient light.

@btydrvn would a soft-white bulb create a more diffuse, less patterned light do you think?

DH thinks he might like the one on the right better. I’m not sure where I’m at yet, but I’m ready to make a decision! lol

I would look for a bulb that shines downward only ..,if you don’t want shadows on the ceiling .. like a flood lite

Why the dropped coffer over the island ? IMO we need to see the space and I think all bulbs in kitchens should be LED 4000K and no string lights anywhere .I also think the ribbed on will cast weird shadows if the only light in use .

@Anne Duke, thank your so much for the image! i can see a very faint pattern on your ceiling but nothing like i was thinking. They look lovely!

@Patricia Colwell Consulting we’re doing it so that we don’t have to rip up our ceiling up to go from one fixture to two and because we think it will look nice something like this:

i don’t have a recent shot of the whole kitchen. This one was taken early in the year when i was thinking about pendants sizes, but then things were put on hold.

We’ve pulled the window frames off. We’re going to redo them, and decided to paint them white. And we’ve put up 12x3 subway tile. This the only spot shot I have of the tiles.

DH is going to connect the cabinets over the Windows, kind of like in this picture in order to install task lighting over the back counters.
