We are using red oak floors. Both walnut and ebony have a yellow undertone to it. These floors seem so chocolatey. We have sampled jacobean, dark walnut and maghony (sp?) with not the same result. Thanks anyway.

That's because you're starting out with red oak. You need to work with the properties of your material. In color theory, we learn that to counteract yellow, we add a little blue to the base. To counteract red, we add a little green. You might get the right result with a product like milk paint (watery). But then you're painting, not staining. Good luck!

Thanks so much for your help. Since you seem to be so well informed, I was wondering if you could recommend a standard minwax stain to use to achieve a nice medium dark color. Have u tried mixing different stain colors?

I've never mixed stain colors--does anyone out there have some experience in this? It would be interesting to know. The Minwax website might have some help for you. Stain is a lot of trial and error to get just what you want. I wouldn't go with mahogany, as that will bring out more red. I'm wondering what would happen if you first used one of the complementary colors that I mentioned (green or blue), wiped it right off, let it dry and then tried your dark walnut? Ask the Minwax people!

There are wood dyes you can try also, we had some new trim we needed to color match to some old trim. The new trim was pine, but the old trim was douglas fir. To get even get close on the stain we had to dye the pine to the slight yellow of douglas fir, then color match the stain. You may need to try this technique also

Just stained our white oak floors and got a very similar result. The final formula was 1 part Jacobean and one part midnight mahogany.

we just did our red oak with the new color by minwax, "honey" and they look very similar.

My personal experience from mixing different stain colors is that it is important to mix all that you will need for entire job (or at least each coat) all at once because it is difficult to achieve same shade even if you use same combinations in subsequent batches. Jmho.
