I am not so sure they go with anything. This black/painted is a huge fad in decor which I get but once one ventures into the world of changing what is perceived as permeant elements in/on a home to follow said fad one enters into a world of very expensive. I always fall back on what do you want people to be talking about when they look at your home? WOW that looks amazing or WOW the______(insert window color, shingle choice, front door color) is ________(bold, striking, fun yadda yadda) I strive to make the whole give a statement not emphasize ONE element.

It depends a lot on the style of the house and the style of the window and other factors. On my house I chose black windows on the exterior and on the interior the sashes only are black and the rest of the trim is the room color. That's because the original design of my house spec'd black steel windows (which were never installed). That said, these are very narrow casements with very narrow horizontal muntins only. If they were a typical kind of thick double hung they would probably look terrible on this house.

No window color is going to go with all colors or all houses. My house did not look great with white. A historic (200 yr. old) house by me that had dark green (but rotting) windows that were probably original is getting new windows and so far they are white. They don't look right either, they are much too bright and white paint was very rare for trim on a house of this age, it would have been off-white at best unless they were very rich.

So without knowing more about your situation it's hard to say whether black frames would be appropriate in your situation or not, regardless of whether they are currently a fad. If they are appropriate, they will look good whether it is a fad or not. If they look good they will still look good after the fad is over.
