Bosch refrigerator "peeling" / spots

last modified: 4 years ago

Anyone else have this issue with any newer bosch appliances? There IS a coating on these and the true stainless underneath is lighter. I am having 1 door replaced. Now the other door has a spot Wondering if this is a factory issue? I use soft cloths and water to clean. The thing is 1 year old.

Also, very important, go side to side when cleaning with Dawn. Go with the grain.

Wd40 & a micro fiber towel. Fixed it. It’s the adhesive from the protective film. The Wd40 will remove it. Use a micro fiber towel to wipe. New doors are around $1000. Wd40 $5. 🤪

^^^ can you send pictures before and after?

  • last year

Similar to this photo. The before.

  • last year

^^^ I'm not sure if it's the case with Bosch fridge since owners didn't have the problem after peeling the protective plastic. Problem developed with time.

  • last year

Mine too. It started about a year after I bought it. We were about to replace both doors. My repair guy took a micro fiber towel & Wd40. It worked. He said it’s the adhesive left behind. The Wd40 is a solvent that’ll remove it. Use a micro fiber towel too. seemed to work better.

  • last year

^^^ if it worked, it would be great. Easy and cheap solution. I have a Bosch fridge but didn't use it yet, so I keep my fingers crossed, if I have this problem, that works to fix it.

  • last year

My refrigerator looks brand new. The after photo. The Wd40, micro fiber cloth & stainless steel cleaner.

The Wd40 works as a solvent. It removes the adhesive. The micro fiber & stainless steel cleaner polished it. It actually looks better in person.

Bosch wants to charge me $175 to come look at my refrigerator. My refrigerator looks just like first picture, it looks spotty and it looks like the brushed part of the stainless steel is coming off. I bought my refrigerator in 2021 and it looks like a 35 year old refrigerator. I am so upset. My old French door refrigerator was 15 years old and the brushed stainless steel looked brand new. Bosch will not fix it. Does anyone know about a lawsuit. I also have a Bosch dishwasher and the same part has broken three times. I am a single guy and I don’t use the dishwasher everyday.

  • last year

I will try the WD40. I have only used water and stainless steel cleaner on my refrigerator. When I called Bosch they told me not to use WD40. What a messed up company. Never again will buy their products.

  • last year

I am very interested to see further results on the WD-40, it works for most other things! i went to GREAT pains to return my refrigerator and replaced it with a Samsung. i could have tried this before the ild one was taken away. However, assuming this would work, I’d imagine it is a slow and tedious process, which is above and beyind what a manufacturer should require any customer to do. NEVER will I purchase Bosch again.

  • last year

    It took five minutes.

  • last year

A completely different issue to what I had then. The clearcoat was failing on mine, as seems to be the case with most of the other posts on this thread.

  • last year

It’s stainless steel. There’s no coating. I did not believe it too.

  • last year

You must have a different product, mine was fingerprint resistant = clearcoat. My Wolf, Marvel and Miele appliances are raw brushed stainless. The new Samsung fridge has clearcoat but it is bullet proof. I used acetone on the store display model and it didnt make a mark. Unlike the junk used on the Bosch.

  • last year

Yes, mine is the clearcoat (suppose to provide resistance to fingerfingerprints) In the areas it has complely flaked off it is a flat stainless steel appearance Is this latest information indicating the bakance of the clearcoat can be removed with WD 40?

  • last year

My Bosch refrigerator is doing the same thing. They will not do anything about it except sell me a new door- and I have to find someone to install it! I will not buy Bosch again

  • last year

My fridge is 1 years old and this white cast issue seems to be accelerating! I'm so annoyed!! I even special ordered the BOSCH cleaner and have only used it from the get-go with microfiber cloths. Nothing else has ever touched the surface.

  • last year

So sad. Unfortunately the Bosch wipes the service tech used on mine made the issue worse. Then you talk to Bosch or read the manual and you should only ever use a microfiber with a bit of hot water or a weak solution of dish detergent. Horrendouus.

As an FYI, I just had a Bosch service tech come today. We have the same issue with the anti-fingerprint material flaking off on all 3 doors of our 800 series (B36CT80SNS/09). After discussing the issue with Bosch initially, they "were sorry to hear" about the problem and sent the service tech out. They mentioned that the doors could be replaced for "free", but had to pay for labor. The service tech ordered all 3 doors, and the labor charge was just under $500. They just replace the "door" -- the handles, trim, shelves, some wiring, etc. all will be transferred to the new doors. Installation of the doors is supposed to take a little over an hour ($20 every 6 mins). While it is costing me $$, at least it's not too bad. NOTE: The tech said the cost of each door would be over $300!

The bottom line is that the coating is very thin, and ONLY mild dish soap and water using a microfiber towel in the direction of the grain is supposed to be used. and DON'T use ANY stainless steel wipes, even those from Bosch!

Congrats! Mines is horrible and I started complaining a year into ownership. Owned since 2020. My previous refrigerator (Kenmore lasted 20 year until the compressor finally gave out) at which time I thought I was upgrading and purchased Bosch.

Guess you just have to stay on them. Unfair you had to pay anything. This is obviously a defect, and until someone chases a class action ... we'll just have stay on them or give up and buy another brand. I have model B36CL80ENS/03. I wonder if this is model specific issues or crosses all of their refrigerators.

I don't feel we should have to pay anything for this issue. Of my two doors and two drawers; have issues with both drawers, and one door. This is very frustrating. I will call again and see if I can get them to replace this door - "free".

  • last year

FWIW as a data point, things are still all good on ours, which is model B36CL80SNS/09, new in March 2023. Never cleaned with anything but water and mild dish soap. May just be too early for it to show up, though. It is perennially covered with fingerprints, so maybe they changed that part??

  • last year

They likely have changed; they know there is an issue. I paid $more than $3500 for mines in 2020 … expensive but thought I was purchasing a quality product … only thing I can say really good about my frig is that it is quiet.

  • last year

Here is an update. Finally after 1.5 years Bosch is doing something for this issue. They are saying that “nothing but warm water and soap is suppose to be used on the refrigerator”; not even Bosch stainless steel cleaner and conditioner.

The are going to give me P off materials (costing me around $692) but nothing off of labor which is $200 an hour. I replacing everything both doors and both drawers; which is suppose to be done next week. One door —- the only one not actively showing a problem is back ordered.

  • last year

So you're paying almost $ 700 to replace the door plus labor?

  • last year

That is ridiculous. My stainless steel fridge looks just horrible. I had two lesser brand stainless steel fridge's before this Bosch and the metal looked like new after years of use. Funny how this company cannot take responsibility for an inferior product.

    last modified: last year

To this day, these are the maintenance instructions that they have listed on their website. They also had the conditioner listed on the 800 series web page. (I have time stamped screenshots). This company needs to take responsibility and if anybody's up for a class action lawsuit, please let me know as I'm in.

Yes; unhappy but running out of time to fight with them. The customer service person asked what I used and when I said Bosch stainless steel and water; he told me I should only use water on smudge-proof stainless steal.

I wonder I got less because I said Bosch conditioner; even thought I tried to back out of it repeating I only use water.

When it is all said and done with labor; might be closer to $1000-1100; don’t think they can replace both doors and drawers in one hour.

Trying to get to find the owner manual that came with frig; to see what they say. Installer and a few repair tech have said use Bosch clean and installer actually used a steel cleaner spray not Bosch.

  • last year

I will also google to see if they distinguish between fingerprint resistance. Regardless if not documented in manual that came with it the they are still at fault

We are in South Africa and have exactly the same problem with the finish peeling off.

Yes to replace my all doors and drawers on Bosch 800 cost me $1012.95 Bosch giving me 50% off parts. That in addition to my original cost of $4146. Unfortunately I did not have the time to fight this as I was getting ready to sell my home and the frog issue had to be addressed. I plan to fight for 100% reimbursement because I recorded the tech saying Bosch says to use their stainless steel cleaner/ conditioner and he always recommend. I used this Bosch recommended cleaner a lot as was recommended when frog installed and as tech admired they are instructed. I will fight for 100% reimbursement. Wish me luck.

To AVOD the peeling problem DON’T use anything but soap and water.

    Mild soap like dishwashing

Also, sorry, but it you throughly read the owners manual, while not bold or especially called out they do state not to use stainless steel cleaners

Same problem. Our problem started before, when we only used water and a cloth to clean it. So then we tried the conditioner. Sadly, it had nothing to do with what we clean it with since we didn't use anything.

I cannot believe Bosch are stupid enough to continue pumping out product with this garbage quality clear coat on it. They have had so many complaints and calls to customer support over the last 3+ years and they stubbornly refuse to adapt a continuous improvement approach. I always had great respect for the Bosch name but alas, no more.

I don’t even clean it anymore. Used barely Dawn & warm water and it made it worse. Now I use a microfiber cloth to simply dust it. 5th year of owning it and it’s slowly getting worse here. Now my 4 yr old Bosch 800 series wall oven broke. Motherboard ~$800 to fix. Ridiculous. Bosch no more. I don’t know what happened to them. Going to Wolf or Thermador.

My Bosch fridge will be four in Novemeber. I don’t know why I’m not having the issue with the coating peeling. I do only use warm water on it. However I hate thisrefrigerator with a passion. I hate the layout, actually I hate everything about it exceptfor the smaller sized ice cubes. As much as I hate the thought of spending money on a new one when this thing conks out I’ll be doing the happy dance.

Also in the 5 year club. Same thing, once it goes out I will be happy to replace. Lucky it sits at the far end of my galley kitchen so I only have to get aggravated 2 or 3 times a day 🤪

We bought a Bosch Refrigerator five years ago and planned to replace our dishwasher with a Bosch (we had one at our previous house and loved it). Due to the peeling, we just replaced our dishwasher with Miele and I'm thrilled, I love it more than our previous Bosch. I used to recommend Bosch to all of our friends, but never again. I'm soured. If this were a temporary problem, I'd move on, but with them continuing to use the same crappy coating and handling the situation so poorly, that's ridiculous.

I don't care if the product manual states to use mild dishwashing soap. No one does this. I don't want a high maintenance refrigerator in my kitchen. My kids are off in college and our refrigerator is gently used. I shudder to think what my refrigerator would have looked like 10 years ago when my kids were younger.

I don't have room in my life for a fussy fridge. I'm replacing this refrigerator when it gives out and never looking back at Bosch. Both their design process (moving forward with a finnicky coating and slipping it into the rarely read care instructions) and the way they handled this situation illustrates that Bosch is not customer focused.

Thanks to all of your commentary I didn't get a Bosch fridge or any fridge with the print proof stainless. After a year of trying to find a suitable replacement refrigerator I finally splurged on a paneled SubZero. I love it but gad, that was very expensive especially since I had to get a new cabinet surround because I was replacing a free-standing fridge. I have a Bosch induction cooktop and a dishwasher and they are good - so far. I have an older Bosch dishwasher in another house and I did have to replace the motherboard on that one after about five years. I was going to buy a new DW but couldn't find anything comparable - it's black. It's now nine years old and working well.

We changed our problematic Bosch fridge for a Samsung, never looked back, love it. We were also limited as the new cabinetry was built to fit the Bosch, otherwise would have gone SubZero. Rather than try for a set of matching appliances, we went with specialists in each product area. Wolf for cook top, oven and extractor. Miele dishwasher. Had similar cabinet issue with junk wine cooler and ended up using Marvel, who allegedly build for Viking. Very happy with all the above except wine cooler could be a tad quieter.

What is the Samsung model? I would like to see the dimensions as we have the same issue with the cabinet fit. Thank you!

@Andy Close - I had a noisy Marvel wine cooler too. I didn't notice it until I got rid of the 70dB dishwasher drawers. Then it drove me nuts. I didn't need a wine fridge but I did kind of want a beverage fridge that would keep beverages colder. I ended up getting an Elica because it was the only one that gave a dB rating and it was lower than my Bosch dishwasher. Never heard of the brand but it's working out well.

We just bought a Bosch 300 when our old GE’s compressor died, (after developing a leaky solenoid and ruining the engineered hardwood under it), and the problem with it is that taking the ’protective’ plastic wrap off pulled the fingerprint-resistant finish off as well, on all three front-facing panels. They sent a tach, who tried soap and microfibre, then WD40, then noticed the cloth went from sliding to dragging when going from one side of the weird marks to the other. Now we are waiting for Bosch to respond. If there is difficulty, perhaps I will suggest to Costco that they should take their fridge back, and them deal w/Bosch, and perhaps start canvassing law firms regarding a class action.

I would take the opportunity and get a refund. It doesnt matter if they give you new doirs at this stage. Their clearcoat process is obviously flawed, and WILL fail sometime in the future. We were extremely happy for 3 years with the SAMSUNG repkacement we purchased for $3,000. However, last week it started flooding inside the fridge. I’ve determined the heater element inside one of the ice cube tray water supply lines has failed, causing it to freeze up.. Long story short, SAMSUNG have blown me off, offering to pay for parts only. Labor for ’diagnosing’ and new parts install is ridiculous, Therefore I’ll fix it myself at my time and cost and steer everyone away from SAMSUNG.

    Good luck to you.

This is a big factory defect with the stainless Steel. Bosch needs to do a recall.
