Lighting specialist question…

If you have lighting knowledge and experience I would love your professional feedback…
I use a small “dining” area off my living room as a homeschool area and have a large wall of bookcase for books, decor, etc.. my son does school there, I read in the chair and family fills up the room on football Sundays.
We are outing in new flooring you can see laid out, My style is modern traditional, with vintage, industrial notes. I want a timeless fixture that has some “cool” to it. I also want a casual, comfortable feel. I typically do not need to blast the room with light as there is a large window to the left of the bookcase with lots of natural light, but I do want to softly light up the room and create cozy ambiance. Here are some options I am drawn to. Thank you for any guidance!

I hate any form of Edison bulbs in any space they give horrible yellow light and IMO not ever used in a ceiling light which IMO needs to provide only one layer of lighting . You need layers of lighting which would include floor lamp table lamps and if you must one center fixture .It would be helpful to see the whole room

You can put spot lights on top of the book case and aim them along the ceiling towards the middle of the room. It will give you nice even indirect light. I'm thinking of a can-shape spotlight that just sits on top of the bookcase.

Clip-on spotlights that shine on the bookcase contents could also look good. There are other kinds of shelf lighting too that would brighten up this part of the room attractively, e.g. LED light strips.

Plug-in wall sconces that wash the wall with light are also good for a soft cozy feel, since you're not looking for task lighting.

And none of these options requires an electrical install.

It's hard to make suggestions -- your single photo gives us little sense of your style, and the lights are kind of all over the place.

I like a simple flushmount or semi-flush. You can get a little interest and diffuse light without going wild. I get the sense you want black finish with maybe something offbeat, so here is a bit of brainstorming to help you think.

Thank you! This last one is on my design board! Let me share another photo to show scale and windows…

I will have to share another photo when I get home. I thought I could upload any photo.

Partim, I like the idea of shelf lighting, do you recommend any specifically? Also, there is an existing power box in the room so I want to instal something on the ceiling but maybe also incorporate wall sconces or book shelf lighting as well to create a better feel.

I will add a photo of the room when I get home. Thank you for your input thus far, that makes sense to have layers of lighting…

I don't have a specific recommendation for shelf lighting but there seems to be a lot of it around, and inexpensive. Same with the cabinet-top lighting which I had in my previous home. It sheds a nice light over the room. Again, inexpensive. They're some good layers to consider. My decorator was big on wall sconces and we wired them in because we had the electrician in anyway, but the plug ins are good looking too. No end table needed and you can put them pretty well anywhere. The room looks very nice with the walls washed with light.

Ok, I have years in lighting, and it looks like you already have warm light in the room, and since you do not need "reading light" per say, any of your choices would be fine. That being said since you are not really needing a light there, Im not sure you actually need to install one. I could see just putting a cover over that spot and letting the room be since it's not really centered to anything.

I do also like the idea of directing light at the bookcase, but you may find it just reflects or glares off of the glass doors.

Honestly to me, it seems like " there was a spot to put a light so we did" when in fact you are not using the room that way, table lamps give a warm glow and ambiance.

You could also just put a recessed light there. Is it on its own switch?

Ambient lighting (the ones on the ceiling) are used to see how to get into a room in the dark and are usually switched on from the doorway. Once in the room, those can be turned off or dimmed down because the task lighting (table and floor lamps) and the accent lighting (shelf, art and up lights on the floor) take over to add the warm ambiance you are looking for. Pix of all your walls and furniture for the room should elicit an overall plan to get you there.

Here are additional views of the layout downstairs in the adjoining room. Excuse the mess. The new lighter oak floors are being installed in the next few days so hopefully the whole house will feel lighter. There is no ceiling light in the living room, one outlet above the “library” area…then a hall “boob” light which doesn’t dim and blasts the space with light, but in an off balance way. I would like to mount something to the ceiling in the library area to add more light that is dimmable but also potentially bookcase lighting for the layered effect. I live in Washington and in the fall/winter that side of the house is so dark, the lamps in the adjoining room just don’t give enough light and then the hallway light is too bright. We had a bid for can lights but it was so expensive.

We used white can uplights like this in our last house when we had a similar situation with a cabinet in a dark corner. Just set them in place on top of the cabinet. You do have to try a few positions and angles to figure our the best way to aim them. Your objective is to wash the ceiling with light. Versatile and inexpensive.

Remember that with pot lights your ceiling is still dark. When we renovated our current home we had ceiling pot lights installed. Waste of money. We rarely use them. The light fixtures that wash the ceiling and walls with light are much more pleasant.

beautiful space, I would still consider converting the boob and the library to just recessed lighting. getting the boob light to dim is just a matter of changing out the switch.

Use the electric box for the boob light to install track lighting that "circles" the room. If the lights on it are adjustable, you can highlight parts of the built in, art or architectural features, etc. They also have optional pendants that can be installed strategically.

Thank you! What great natural lighting you have 😁

RL Relocation LLC, thank you foe taking the time! I like the idea of recess lighting for both the boob and the overhead in the library…if my husband doesn’t want to deal with getting an electrician to put in recess lights I may hold off and plan on that in the future and dim the hall boob (didn’t know I could use a dimmer, how many dimmer switches are acceptable in a home? I LOVE them and already have 3 downstairs). And maybe instal a flush/semi flush mount like you put in the pic.
Also thought of adding the picture lights or battery powered shelf lamps 🤷‍♀️

all switches should be dimmers in my eyes, there is no limit. that being said you can also get flush mount disk lights that look like recessed, LED that can be dimmed as well. https://www.houzz.com/products/wac-lighting-disc-7-4-15w-3000k-1-led-flush-mount-pack-of-4-prvw-vr~151961792

RL Relocation LLC, thank you! I agree with no limit to dimmer switches. I have seen these discs, I just thought maybe there a little cheap looking? I have a builder grade house that I am “elevating” and wasn’t sure if that would scream “I didn’t have money for a real can light” 😂 or if it basically just disappears 🤷‍♀️

I think they would have the same look as the new LED cans do. I suppose you could go to home depo and look at them bc Im pretty sure they carry them as well.

I will do that, thank you!

Thank you Partim that is helpful!
