The piano seem stuck in the corner like it's been naughty. Could pull the piano out of the corner and replace the tall filing cabinet with a 2-drawer lateral filing cabinet under the window? I think that would let the piano be more of a feature and make the wall more balanced.

It definitely needs to slide over, doesn’t it!!! It ended up stuffed there temporarily as we had a bookshelf crammed in there for a hot minute while renovating another space.

The filing cabinet actually has moderate sentimental value…I’ll have to think about whether I’m ok replacing it with a lateral of the same volume. If I did, I could get one that matches the piano better, but….I am a sucker for sentimentality. :)

I remember your room when you had the tree up. You made a lot of positive changes. Try moving the piano to be as centered as possible with the cabinet still to its right and close to the corner by the doorway. Hang the horn and guitar between the windows and add art 5" above the piano. Art can be quite large; probably 2/3 of the piano's width.

Switch the file cabinet and the piano . Instead or art why don't you frame music sheets?

There isn’t a guitar that currently lives in this room, but I can definitely get one from another room (yes, there are 11 in another place), and it actually wouldn’t be bad to have one out here for fun playing, too-would it help balance this wall visually? I might even be able to choose color- within some constraints from my husband?
It sounds like it might help- guitar and horn stacked in a big visual to balance with file cabinet on the opposite side?

And- you read my mind on music stand- I have the requisite black stand (2, actually), but am planing to make my own wooden stand as an art piece/just to be cool in this space. :)

I can frame sheet, definitely, but I’m worried that a lot of little things might be too visually busy with the one part of the room you can’t see? (this has been a huge project of room reshifting, and the 2 walls of built in library shelves you can’t see are currently blocked by boxes of my sewing/crafting things waiting for the built in cabinets we are installing. The shelves are full of books (the cabinets under them will have closed doors).

Oh! I see the guitar!!! Hahaha! I couldn’t see my original post and was just guessing. That is in fact a kid guitar that lives in their room usually! :) Can definitely get one to live out here if it would help, though. My husband might even jump at the chance to buy another one- he’s out of space in the guitar area. 😹

It would probably help to get a bench in the same color as the piano, right? ;) Looking for one already.

Right now I’m actually leaning towards pic 1? I was all set to do instruments and cabinet flanking the centered piano, but I’m not seeing enough room. :( thoughts on tweaking any of these?

The horn hanger depends on a stud, so there will be a little bit of forced positioning with it (not trusting any sort of drywall anchor with this $8k instrument I use professionally); I have a large print to try in the space temporarily once I settle on furniture!

Propped the print up…the small thin drawer system was tucked behind the chair, but trying it out here? (And yes- the mess of modem/wifi on the right side of the piano will be dealt with once we know where the big things are going. This is the only cable outlet in the house!)

I don't care for cornered furniture unless it is designed to be put in a corner. IMO, cornering eats up more floor space and seems to say, "Well, I really have too much stuff so this was all I knew to do with it." Hang the horn and a guitar between the windows. Use an anchor bolt. Do you need cable for TV? Should the TV be on the piano wall in that case?

No cable needed for the tv! It’s for movies only. We haven’t had a cable line for tv in over 20 years. :) (and if we need to it’s easier to run it from outside to right where the tv is. )

I’m not sure there is space for a guitar between the window and the piano. But my daughter just got a positive covid test, so I’ll have plenty of time to move furniture around in the next few days. 😹😭

Sorry about the test results! Hope it will be a light case. I was referencing the wide space between the two windows, not exactly near the piano. I'd prefer art over the piano.

That makes sense- I’ll play with that idea and see if it works functionally. We do need something in that space. (The tiny painting is just there until we frame it and find a better home for it.)

And yes- luckily all adults are vaccinated and she just seems flu level of misery. Keeping my 7yo healthy and entertained, however…

No, I haven’t! I’ll try that, too! The glory of tile floors is I can slide these massively heavy pieces by myself with some effort!

Back with more! I tried the horn on the space between the windows, and I can safely and easily take it on and off. (Check one). However, it isn’t always up there (if I’m at work, it’s with me), and that is the view from the front door. I forgot about that until I stepped back to take a picture! I am designing in my mind a horn holder that looks good both filled and empty…but I don’t know if I’ll succeed!

I also slid stuff just about everywhere and took pics! The skinny cabinets hold dvds. They don’t have to stay anywhere near here if they don’t work here.

How are you feeling about the different configurations?

IMO the cabinet in the 'first set of 4(1st pic)', flows the best. The cabinet on the same wall as the piano looks too crowded.

What about piano under window with taller pieces on solid wall?

Not an expert but I've read that pianos and exterior walls are a bad mix. Might depend on climate? Still, this info prompts me to ask about window treatments. I know UV does a number on furniture and art; I imagine it might do the same on musical instruments? If the DVD cabinet does not need to be in this area, I would remove it. It simply adds visual clutter, imo. I prefer the cabinet to the left of the piano but I wouldn't angle it in the corner. If you want the piano bench the same colour as the piano, could you gel stain it? (If it's not precious.) Might be easier than to hunt for one that matches? Another idea is to paint it a colour that relates to one in the room, perhaps the wall colour? Speaking of colour, the overhead lighting seems a bit dim. I'd see if if a stronger bulb could be used in the overhead light and consider a floor lamp "between" the two areas.

I’m honestly not sure how I feel about any of them. They all have functional and visual pros and cons. I think I need to “live” with each of them in turn for a few days to really feel?

The wall is a basement wall so very stable in temperature, and the piano is a “free” mid century spinet, not a quality item, so I think either wall would work, honestly. There would be enough room under the windo for the piano…but getting it there is not a one person job anymore, so it will take a bit to try. :)

Window treatments are up in tye air. It’s a north facing split level with a deck shading it from the west, so there is NEVER sun entering. Do we need them? It’s hard because they are sliders, but I don’t like the look of blinds over the trim and dont want curtains down here…

The bench is not a match to the piano and didn’t come with it; I would be happy to gel stain or paint it (hunting for a new one that does match).

And we have a plan in the works to fix the very subpar lighting! :) Going to do the flush fake canned led lights, and add two more to the room. Hard to describe, but easy to do, and will greatly improve the lighting. We added them in the kitchen earlier.
