help! is this beveled area falling off old glazing?

This beautiful window was caulked shut and i removed the caulk and it operates perfectly. As i started removing the peeling paint, these plaster like bevels between the glass and the wooden panes started disintegrating or falling off in chunks. the window paint had been constantly growing mildew despite frequent cleaning so i suspected that it needed repairs. the paint job was also very lumpy and messy. Is this the old glazing falling off or is this an old repair job that isnt holding up (hence the chalky and in some areas mushy plaster like layers surrounding the glass and wood panes? all of the windows in this house are original and many have the same moldy beveled area, layered with thick lumpy paint i'm hoping to understand what i'm looking at so that i can continue to correctly maintain these old windows and so i can fix this mess that i got myself into. can anyone help me understand what may be going on here? thank you!

That’s the window putty that seals the glass in. There should also be some little glazing points ( little triangular metal things) that actually hold in the glass. The putty goes over that and then paint over the putty. It’s time consuming but not too difficult, I’ve done most of the windows in my house. But mine are all single pane and not divided light like yours. This is a very helpful book by John Leeke, for learning about restoring old windows. http://historichomeworks.com/

Wow that’s a gorgeous window. Is it really 35/1? Spectacular! Read the book & follow the advice to restore yourself. It is time consuming but so worth it. You can not get gorgeous windows like that anymore. Choose a back or side window to restore first then once you have the steady hand, work on the front windows. That way you won’t be re-doing ones you really notice every day ;)
