Chevron Oak Flooring installation

Help. The carpenter just laid down the chevron oak flooring in our foyer and I am so unhappy with it. First of all, it’s not the biggest space so I was already on the fence to spend the additional money on labor and materials needed in order to do this. But I was reassured that the space would work great with the design. At first glance I have no idea why it would have incorporated such a thick border around it when it was already tight to begin with. Additionally the staircase cut into the pattern which now just looks so off. Please keep me honest. Am I over reacting? Is there a fix here that I just can’t see? Or do I have them rip it out entirely? Thank you for any advice / guidance

I'm guessing it's somehow not what you envisioned, but it's a classic solution and really well executed and quite stunning. The width of the border allows the chevron pattern to simulate a runner which was a clever solution.

Honestly if you wanted to be more involved in the small decisions YOU should have made your desires known at the beginning and sketched a solution up. If you leave these decisions to craftsmen, they make the best decisions they can with the parameters provided.

Looks good! it's centered to the main section. You can't control the skinny portion, unless you want to move your staircase over. You can add some brass for a little more glamour.

This is a once in a decade conguration for a carpenter. A tile guy is a lot more likely to get the most out of this pattern in your space. It's fairly complicated. As Bev said, because this is outside the norm you have to lay out the pattern yourself. There's really ni other choice if you want to be happy with the result.

Beautiful and beautifully balanced with all the constraints the carpenter was working with. It's a very complex math and geometry puzzle and the carpenter executed it skillfully. A smaller border would have thrown the proportions off and looked like edge filler. Managing the design to result in the hallway looking like a runner as it should and maintaining balance in front of the stairs is not easy.

It's just not what you imagined but it's really well done.

Nice install. However, you should have been advised not to abut one floor with another dissimilar pattern.

IMO, you should have continued on with the flooring you have in the adjoining room and then added an outstanding runner in the hall for effect.

For your fix, find a lovely, large rug to cover the living room floor.

Or, separate the two floors with French doors.
