Small master bath with efficiency issue

Debbie Laird

The previous owners added a small master bath that projects from the original small house (in central Illinois), with three exterior walls. Last year, our first winter here, this bathroom got extremely cold, so we added insulation to the bathroom foundation and the ductwork.

The duct work to the bathroom runs through the block wall of the basement, and has a 3-4” gap all the way around the duct. There is a consistent cool breeze from this gap coming back into the basement during the winter. I haven’t blocked the gap thinking the release of cold air is better for the water pipes and heat. Question, should i block it or not?

Any thoughts or suggestions for better efficiency?
