two air returns same room, same duct

Thank you for all the comments on my previous HVAC question.

Have two more…
This is a split level house.

Basement or bottom floor has a room that has two air returns in it. One is by the floor, one is by the ceiling. Same wall and same duct. That duct also goes to the main floor’s bedrooms cold air return.

Is this ok?

Second question…
Air return is in a closet in the basement/bottom floor in the main area. There is another vent in the wall from the room into the closet. I’m guessing they thought would work…. I don’t believe it does and I am leaving closet door open.

Recently I read on the internet that is against code. I had a house inspection go through the house before closing. I asked about that (not knowing at the time it wasn’t code) and the house inspector said that wasn’t part of his inspection.

Two questions there. I’m not familiar with any hvac things….

Thank you!!

How long until you realize "houzzers" reccomend system replacement to solve problems? Come to think of it,isn't this the same question about the same system from your other post? Have you followed the advice you were given before asking for more?

safety is primary concern whether ok or not "depends". Hard to make assumptions in forum board setting without knowing if this truly is a "return" or "supply".

What kind of system? A system that just sat their for 20 years maybe ok as is... but then you come in to make changes and those changes cause safety issues OR there may be safety issues as it sits now? Really not something to guess about if you ask me. (HVAC is an onsite in person job whether you like it or not.)

Just more of the same guessing, you need an on site licensed HVAC guy in person. If you're guessing how is anyone else going to do anything else above a guess?

If you're updating these places to be able to "rent them out"... liability if you inadvertently kill someone, that will upend a real estate investor career rather quickly. Real estate is at least a 30 year game for most (30 years of payments).

Now if this is an all "electric house" -- no gas. That would change the entire equation. Even still you can cause all kinds of problems by guessing. If you're in the rental game, you don't want a revolving door of renters moving in and out every year or two. You're much more successful if renters stay 5 or 10 years at a time.

You need to think of the "long term" game. The guess from me? I think you're asking these things to rent these places out?

    Am I right?

    Thank you!!

This is not a rental. Its a 30 year old home that I purchased last year when houses were selling the same day. I needed a house and also needed to close quickly since I was living in a hotel to be close to by three boys. The comments about real estate or whatever don’t apply here, nor were they at all productive.

This is a separate area than my previous post. The owners I bought it from did lots of questionable cheap DIY things over the years.

I do appreciate the info on the return. Yes it is a return in the same vertical wall space. My questions are answered.

That's my point. It was a guess.

Guessing is productive? There is no amount of guessing I could do "for you" or anyone -- that would be considered "productive".

HVAC is an on site in person job. Nothing I can do, nor you can do to change that.

Charles Ross Homes- thanks again for the help!

Austin air- I find it interesting that you feel everything for HVAC is done in person. Or on-site. The explanation from C.R homes about the air return was exactly what I was looking for.

The only reason I responded to your comment was to clear any misconceptions you presented. If I every go into that market, I’ll make sure to contact you for questions.

Im only responding on this as I think it’s funny.

Thanks again Charles Ross Homes! It’s great to have people on a forum willing to help, or offer professional knowledge without having to pay for an on-site HVAC visit to ask a couple questions.

    Have a great weekend!

    @Austin Air Companie,

The OP asked two simple questions. The code question is straightforward and can certainly be answered by anyone with knowledge of the code. No house call is necessary. The question related to the high/low return merely needed just a little more information from the OP to confirm it was indeed a high/low return.

Threads on houzz.com are typically requests for information of some sort. If everything HVAC related needs a "house call" in your opinion, you'll serve houzzers better by making that a simple, blanket statement when responding to threads and then making a graceful exit from the thread.

Charles Ross Homes- thank you again. It’s also nice to see someone sticking up for the little guy in this scenario.

Provided the return is a return, a supply is a supply.

HVAC is complicated for a wide variety of reasons. Those that know realize builders feed them by providing them work in the future.

I don't think I ever thanked you for that Charles? LOL.

I still find it not only funny, but also amusing.
