help with dining, entry and kitchen. lighting

Hello

I’m trying to decide on chandeliers for my dining room, entry way and over the kitchen table.

I really don’t know my design style. I like everything. Which is the problem. I do like Pottery Barn and I like designers like Christina from Christina on the Cost and I like Hilary from Love It or List It.” I also like the boho style and a little bling.

Please help me decide based on the pictures which chandeliers would look best and cohesive within the three areas since they are fairly close
to each other.

Thank you, Jennifer

Here is my Entry

I like this for over the dining table but don’t know if it goes with entry light
this is my kitchen table. not sure what I should hang here.
I like this style to for the dining room
I like things like this for entry

    Hi Beth.

I really like the mirror idea but I thought it was bad feng shui to have a mirror facing the entry way. I love the wrought iron idea but it would have to be pretty big. The niche is

I was thinking about using the baskets mentioned below but arranged as show in the photo from pottery barn.

    Here are the photos

I'd like those if the wall was painted white or soft white and the inside back wall of niche was black. I just like white/black and natural textures. both of those decor designs I like.

just depends on the size of the baskets

I agree. I like black white and natural colors. The first rug you sent. Where is that one from?

I have the name on there as Ikea, but I'm not sure.

found the same pic w/a diff seller, but you'd have to check to see if it's the same

Says it's nuLoom. You may be able to find it on Wayfair and Overstock

I found some other links for similar

    HI Beth,

I'm torn between two different looks, Based on all the comments would the following items look good together? Then I will include my second look in a different comment. As I mentioned in the beginnining, I have a hard time making a decisions because I like so many different styles. According to the style quiz, I like beachy, transitional and farmhouse.

    1. First Look for Entry Way: Either White Dove or Simply White

    Wide oak plank floors

These baskets hanging in the Niche

    Arranged in this pattern

    OR this pattern

with an entry rug that is light similar to the one below. Not a fan of Jute rugs, they are not soft on the feet and I worry about my dogs nails getting stuck.

Would that be a good look? Anthing you would do different? Also, I need to decide on the entry way light.

    Will this one go?

OR should I stay with the traditional Lantern Style or something else?

I'm going to send my second look in a differnt comment.

Thank you again for all your help and suggestions.

The 'bowl' one seems too petite to me. How high are your ceilings? A light that 'fills', and has same large scale seems ok.

The lantern seems nice, and with wood metal both.

The ceiling height is 10 ft. The light that is currently there drops 10 inches and the light fixture is about 6” wide x 19” high. The window is x 60” x 24”. The entry way is area is 8 x 10.

I would like it to hang in the middle of the window.

Thank you so much for your comments. Jennifer

    HU-65,,,I like what you've chosen!

Do Simply White. I painted my walls White Dove and it was so dingy! I repainted them w/Simply White.

    lots o'pics below!

I agree on the jute rug. get one of the textured like you've shown, or one like this isn't hard on the feet:

    Round iron chandilier^

here's the lighter floor and lighter rug. bright white ceiling, lantern light, white wainscot, pale gray wall

medium stain color, textured rug (but not jute) somewhat of a bling light.

Here's one with your basket idea on the wall. light wood floors and a limestone tile entryway.

white walls, dark chacoal painted doors.

The French Oak plank flooring, perfect!

Look at Calif Classics, Mediterranean collection.

I used that brand on my own floors (the color is Granville). And the wall is Simply White.

Since you like the baskets and such, try for a boho style rug

something along this look w/the lantern style of light you picked.

do you like the beads and wood look lights?

What I would consider for your entryway is an inlay (of tile, or say, a herringbone design) to frame that beautiful doorway you have.

so here they did a tile,,

    Gray slate tile

But you could also lay out a diff pattern just in the doorway area in the same wood:

I love this one w/the lantern light, the wood floor and the inlay is a porcelain tile that looks like a used brick, in a herringbone pattern.

this is a 10x10 porcelain tile that would look beautiful inset into the wood

    matching light

imagine your iron doors, all white, and the wood floors in a pattern. so pretty.

White doors, lantern light, herringbone inlay w/the same flooring (this is a wood look tile)

I did a smaller version of inlay in my floor in the pantry area but used Zellige tiles

My MIL painted plain metal doors white [and not as decorative as yours] - the elegance is gone, and the 'old world' feel.... is that typical?

I like idea of non-crystal traditional.... Includes (2) 8" downrods,

    (2) 12" / and (3) 16" downrods. Height: 23.5" Width: 42"

---- could say that mirror element makes a bit dressy/ bling... I'm trying to find combinations of elements in one piece.

Been busy, so have missed posts... I don't think baskets are dressy enough... I mean mostly if near 'grand' entry doors. Your current niche art's black frame seems harsh .. but from my computer.... perhaps a medium brown like the vase?

I also don't know what I meant by flower and repeating it with chalky colors, sorry!

    Hi Beth,

Thank you for the pictures and the wonderful ideas. So many beautiful ideas! I like the Simply white and the white oak floors. I like the idea of laying the flooring in the entry way in a herringbone pattern. The porelain tile is very pretty. A good idea for my Laundry room, which is close by.

I like the area rug in the first picture. I thought you sent me a picture of a black runner with fringe on the end, but I can't seem to find it. I did like that rug as well. Can you send me the information on it if you have it?

I definitely liked the bling light fixture, but I'm thinking my husband would not go for it. If I go with the lantern fixture, what color would be best, Black, Bronze, Gold, Black & Bronze?

Lastly, the light over the dining room table. If I use the lantern light in the entry, will any of these lights work over the dining room table? Or should I use a bigger lantern Style?

Thank you again for all your help. I can't express how much it has meant to me. Jennifer

    Hello Everdebz,

Thank you for all your input. It's always helpful to get multiple comments. I understand how you feel about the baskets in the entry. I'm thinking that's a very good point. Beth suggested a wrought iron inlay, which I think would be a pretty idea. The art and lights you suggested is a little too modern for me. When I took the Style Quiz, it said my design style was beachy, transitional and farmhouse.

Thank you again for all your suggestions.

I suppose you could mix a toasty item to mix on wall with woven items... but are you wanting any color, canvas art even? If keeping metal doors, I think you could place something other than iron in the niche.

Niche/basket -- if house style is going that direction, an authentic cloth starched onto niche wall might look striking... just ideas.

I really don't have any links for the rugs in the pictures.

    Try:

Cost Plus world market ( they have many diff types of rugs for decent prices)

    RugsUSA

    Etsy

    or even Houzz.

    Of course Wayfair.

I wouldn't get the cheap ones made of polypropolene (sp) because it's very thin and they look cheap. you want a wool/nylon type of mix

    Hi Beth,

I saw this rug at Kirklands, what do you think?

I also saw this one at Costco. It's the one in the middle. It has a bit of silver looking in it.

Thank you so much for your help. Jennifer

Is that for entry? it'll show dirt... I'd prefer a pattern not geometrically "perfect" which floor tile is also. Both together seems too 'structured'.

I don't recall if you want to further/ strengthen the somewhat Mediterranean flavor. If you liked the 2 rugs I posted, why not look at some? That way, a change of flooring isn't "essential."

    Hello,

I was planning on painting Simply White and Changing the Floors to Wide Oak Plank. I'm enclosing my little video so you can see what I have going on.

Yes, the two rugs you suggested would look great if I didn't paint or get new floors.

I like the size of the picture in the Niche, it looks propertional to size of Niche, where my Niche is Huge and has a square picture. Also I do have a light above the Niche, but not insde the Niche.

Thank you again for all your help.

I think you should do your floors and paint first, and then go for the rug. easier that way.

would you get that 5x8 size or something smaller?

What would be the best size?

I don't know what the entry way is!

maybe a tad smaller. unless you have the space for a longer runner

i just think this one is a tad too large.

    maybe a little narrower?

My entry is 8 ft wide x 10 ft long

    up to you.

I'd still wait until you get the floors done and everything painted.

    I'd even paint those doors.

if you decide to do a decorative piece on the floor, you aren't going to cover it w/a full rug. maybe you'll just want to small one by the door.

you could do a glass inlay for that transom. remove the grids if you can, have a piece made and just stick it in there. I did it w/my bathroom window.

have fun w/the window and make it a statement.

use to bring in the light and highlight the chandelier

you could opt for a runner like this

All amazing ideas but our budget doesn’t allow for added expenses. I agree with you we need to paint the door. We don’t plan on doing anything until after the holidays. I was just hoping to decide on an entry light, and chandelier since I’ll be hosting the holidays. Thank you again. I appreciate all your comments and love the photos you send n

Your dining room has s sloped ceiling and the center is a beam, so I imagine you cannot put electrical there, you would have to hang it off to the side and then swag it over. you also need to do that for your kitchen table. Have you consulted an electrician yet?

Elk lighting, entry the other two are kichler

also if you can afford a new rug I would go with something milder, that draws from the existing colors.

Thank you for your suggestions. Good point on consulting the electrician. He won't be here till December. I like the rug you suggested. Thank you.

    I like that rug too.

what if you painted the walls, and both those doors? can you do that before you host?

you are already wired for the light. changing it out to another chandelier literally would take 5 mins.

Hello. I like RL's pattern with tile- they seem a good combo. What you liked way above that was Oriental, I think was too dressy with tile [though we liked it with niche art].

RL, I was referring to the light hanging in the entryway. I was talking about this portion, not the DR.

I was talking about the dining room, its clear she is already wired in the entry, but if she wants to get all three lights installed, she first needs to make sure that is possible is all I was saying

RL, I was referring to your comment directed at me

Beth, the dining room has no electrical, a pitched ceiling, and an air duct.

I was never commenting on the DR. All of my advice has been for the entry. It sounded like you were trying to make me aware of this fact when I never mentioned the DR at all. You may as well have said, "The backyard doesn't have room for a pool".

Doesn't matter if she wants to change out the light in the entry. It will take 5 mins. (she doesn't need an electrician to install the light) the other room doesn't have to be wired first for that to happen. Yes of course, if she wants light in the DR it will need to be wired. I think we all realize that.

snarky ..............anyway carry on Ill leave it up you, I was referring to her stating it was a good idea about the electrician, next time I wont bother.

    last modified: 5 years ago

not at all. I responded to your first comment and you just had to come back at me. With your snark.

(were you trying to convey, "if you have the electrician come out and do everything at once, you may save money"?

But that's why I mentioned it will only take 5 mins to switch out the entry light. She or her other half could do it themselves. (and save $100) You don't need an electrician to change out a simple light that's already wired. Maybe that's where you got mixed up)

your comment shouldn't have been directed at me.

    Hello Everyone,

I'm sorry if any of my photos or comments have caused a riff.

I'm including additional photos to show wher the ceiling outlet is. The pitch is not even on both sides so I'm wondering if I would need to swing it over to the middle of the pitch. Having said that here are some new photos showing ceiling outlet.

I definitely need a new vent.

Here is another view as I'm coming from the Master Bedroom. I really wnt a light fixture that makes me smile. I would really like something that has a little bling.

    Everdebz,

You asked for a picture coming in from the front door. Please see below.

This picture is taken from me stading under the big picture looking out.

RL, I love the entry rug you chose. Is that grey and tan? Can you tell me where you saw it or send me a link? My pictures are showing a weird yellowish color, but that's not the true color.

Beth, I love all the door ideas you sent. I would love to get new doors, but not sure if that's in the budget, but I agree, the doors need to be painted.

Thank you again everyone for all your inpu.

With sun streaming in, the blue rug looks better. The art does seem high... can't talk more now.

HU,,what I'd prob do is center the light over the table, rather than the room. and your window is off center, so putting the table centered on the window looks good. and I notice they did that because the window lines up w/the roof angle.

I have a sloped ceiling in my own dining room and centered the light over the table, which is pushed over to the right like yours.

(bad picture. I'm still looking for another table, I no longer have the chairs. this was taken after I had new floors installed. The wide plank oak we talked about. I'm looking for a completely diff style table, prob a round one)

anyway, you can see the light was installed on the slope. the canopy has an adjustment for the angle and will hang straight. It's also off center since that's where my table is!

another install on a sloped ceiling.

if you want, you can do a swag install

    Hi Beth

Funny how just about every room in my house is off centered. I love the chandelier over your table. Your floors are beautiful. Can’t wait to get new floors. Thank you for your advice on hanging the chandelier.

Most want to see big picture. Many want to use "what they have." The niche is right in front - so with rug covering, and coloring the entry - I like Beth's and others ideas. Here's a blue penny tile I happened upon. It's a good place to showcase. Forget even the light if ya have to. Many won't even look up / and it shows nice rays ?
