We live in an older 50s home that had a garage conversion --> primary suite completed in the 70s. We are trying to determine if we can squeeze in a new garage in front of the previous one in our small California lot. Our zoning requirements are that we must have a 25 foot setback, and the garage space be at least 20 feet in length. I believe this is the interior dimensions, so I need to know how much additional space to allow for the thickness of the garage door wall. At the closest point to the front property line we have only 20' 7'' before we hit the setback. Is that enough space to provide a 20 foot interior length?

As an aside, we are not worried about the size of the garage itself. In this area almost 0 people park their cars in their garages, and those houses that I have been in that do have garages have an interior dimension of ~19 x 19 (presumably the requirements have changed). So this garage would fit in well in the area, if we can get it to fit and pass zoning reqs. Plus we have a 120 sq. ft. shed in the back for storage as well.
