To me, it looks like the cooktop is 36” and the hood is 42” which is what it should be.
You should have three inches on either side of the range covered by the hood.
So if you have a 48” cooktop you’ll need 54” hood.
The design looks very nice!!

That tall needs a triple stack with a library ladder.

We also have 12' ceilings and we are doing 42" cabinets with 18" stacked glass upper cabinets mainly because the smaller cabinets just look so lost on these tall ceilings, although ours will not go to the ceiling, but I felt like it looked more in scale to have taller cabinets. Yes, it will be for decorative items only, but hey, the short cabinets on 12' ceilings are lonely and naked, lol.

Do you need a few inches between the hood and the cabinets to make your hood a significant focal point? Our KD said we needed 4" between the hood and the cabinets although I see that your hood is more mantle style and is probably designed that way for a reason. This is just a reference pic for our spacing on the 12' ceilings.

Given the length of the wall, taking the cabinets to the ceiling produces an uncomfortable proportion. I generally do not advise taking cabinets to a 12' ceiling unless the space has very large volume.

I agree that the design looks odd because the immense vertical wall cabinets overwhelm the scale of the wall and base cabinets. People usually don't go all the way to the ceiling, or they use coffers, or find other ways to keep scale.

Here goes my opinion, hey… everyone has one.

My kitchen ceilings are 12 feet , we have 42 + 15 stacked. it kind looks like what design2 girl posted. I kicked around the idea of a library ladder, and may still do it but I prefer this look. You might have to get up there a dust once in a while but thats ok. I feel like a 12 foot wall of cabinetry is imposing and dwarfs everything around it.

Elevation drawings are always going to look more vertical and more narrow than in real life.

The extra storage is fine. Just don't use glass fronts on those upper cabinets.

The real issue is about proportion. 9’ of cabinets over your 36” counter height is just disproportionate and top heavy. Which is why the most successful designs break that up a lot more horizontally through the use of horizontally oriented beams or coffers that visually and actually lower the ceiling height. Or a triple upper stack, with a horizontal rail for the library ladder separating the very top of the stack from the lower. .
