Kitchen layout: To L shape or not?

Kitchen reno layout help! We currently have a galley kitchen with a through loop that lets us access the different parts of our lower floor. We are looking at two options.

Option 1) close off wall, create L shape

  • lots of counter space
  • lots of storage/cabinets
  • functional layout
  • will gain a mud room on the other side of the wall
  • cut off passageway to garbage cans outside/will need to walk the garbage through the kitchen around the stairs and through the hall to get to the outside
  • only one entry/exit point to kitchen

Option 2) keep corner open

  • maintain passageway to outside/garbage cans
  • kids could still run around the kitchen loop
  • not maxing out cabinet and counter space (we’d lose about 4 ft of corner counter space)
  • 21” of counter to left and right of the cooktop in this version vs 45” and 69” in the L version.

What am I forgetting to consider? Please please help me figure this out!!
