Thanks, all! I guess I just assumed it would look super bare to not have a runner along the hallway but I can try without it and see. If it DOES seem bare, would you suggest a rug in a different pattern from the one by the door? I don’t want to be too matchy matchy

Does the rug need to function as a doormat to keep dirty, wet, or snowy shoes off the wood floors or do you live somewhere that has dry, warm weather? If you use that entry as a place where the family takes off their dirty shoes and guests wipe off their shoes, then I would vote for one large rectangular rug directly inside the door and don't skimp on the size. A round rug requires walking on the wood to reach the rug so it wouldn't function well as a doormat.

Yes, we will need it to protect the floor from the elements (we live in Ohio). I love the idea of a runner style rug that runs alongside/under the entry table beside the staircase but think it would look silly to have two—and we definitely want one right inside the door.

I don’t think it looks silly, it’s a common thing to have two rugs. I wouldn’t match them.
