On line hosta nurseries

It’s getting to be that time of year to curl up on the couch and plan for spring.

The alphabet helps with the wish list but the actual finding of the plants is getting a bit more difficult.

It seems a lot of the bigger/more well known ones were a bit overwhelmed by the incease in business caused by the pandemic and others have gone out of business.

Which ones have you guys purchased from in the last year or so and still been satisfied? I’ve also noticed shipping has gone up a lot with some places so that also affects my buying

Oursteelers,I have always loved Hornbakers Hostas. They ship you the same hosta they ship their wholesalers which is a gallon plant. They come packaged bare root but with plenty of moisture in the wrappings. I also have ordered from Land of the Giants though in lieu of Jeff’s passing, not sure if family will be taking on the business, I assume so as it is a large farm and many many plants must be growing. I have ordered from Uniquely Hostas here in WI too. Their plants are small and bare root, but they grow well. I have ordered from New Hampshire hostas with good results too. There is one company I wouldn’t order from again but I have to look in my records to check which one.

I have ordered from LoTG and Green Mountain in the past and everything was great but their websites made me a little leery this time around.

Naylor was great but they are gone now. ’ve never done Hornbakers so perhaps I’ll try them. I’ve done Northern Grown Perennials and been happy in the past but their shipping has gone up and so I was trying to find some new places

Crownsville Nursery is good, sends root-bound, healthy, potted plants that grow well. They pack/ship very well.
Hostas-Store sends barefoot, almost always great, healthy plants. They pack/ship well, though plants occasionally are shipped too soggy and suffer a setback.
New Hampshire Hostas is great, sends potted or barefoot depending on size ordered. Their potted plants for newer or popular varieties can be small. They pack/ship well.
Plant Delight Nursery is pricey, but usually sends big, healthy, root-bound potted plants even of new varieties. They pack/ship well, though shipping is pricey.

utog, I tried to look at Crownsville but they are shut down for the season. I have got from New Hampshire Hostas before and am currently compiling a Christmas wish list!

Ooh, I forgot about Sebright. They’re wonderful! Shipping is pricey, but worth it. Opening a Sebright box is like having a mini-Christmas. Their plants are inexpensive to reasonably priced, good-sized, and gorgeous.

Thank you! I just looked at Sebright’s website. I’m in zone 1 so shipping won’t be too bad. I’m going to add some from them to my Christmas list.

We visited Sebright a couple years ago (highly recommended!) and have ordered from them. excellent shipping and packing and plants have all been exceptional look forward to another order this spring. We live in Idaho so shipping costs aren’t prohibitive. Not anywhere as exciting as a visit to their garden but what I save in gas and lodging can buy a lot more hostas!

I've had some really nice plants from Northern Grown Perennials - in Wisconsin. All field-grown. And they like to include a bonus plant - always appreciated.

Windy, I have had wonderful plants from Northern Grown Perennials but there shipping went up quite a bit plus since I’ve bought from them 3 or 4 times in the past I was kinda wanting a different selection

off topic..I wanted to say I saw the Steelers/Titans game..good game!..

    who's more stressful to watch?..Colts or Steelers?..I say it's a tie..

nw, we are so bad this year. SO BAD. And I am ok with that because we have so many holes to fill thatbwe need good draft picks. All these last minute wins are screwing with that but we don’t have the quarterback to do anything.

The Colts on the other hand are a dark horse, especially with the Chiefs struggling some, I think you guys could go far!

nicholsworth Z6 Indianapolis, you should be a Lions fan! :(

old_dirt..you're right!..Lions fans win for the most stress!!!..

I hope the Colts play as well as the Lions did against the Cardinals..🤞

oursteelers..I just now got a notification for your comment!!..

football is erratic isn't it?..teams can look great and terrible even in the same game!!! (the Colts have)..Colts could? go far if the "good" team shows up Lol..

it'll be interesting to watch and see what happens..

    oursteelers..oh my..we saw the Steelers/Chiefs game..🙁

the Colts won but my husband said at the end.."I should be happy (I was) but they didn't look that good"..

if you want cheer for the Colts now ok?..🙂

Has anyone heard about Green Mountain? They used to send REALLY nice hosta at reasonable prices (usually not the latest introductions). I read that COVID really hurt them and they were not fulfilling orders. Is there any news?

Hey, aren aren’t there any PACKERS fans out there? Though I admit they got lucky in the last game. Watched them since I was a kid (all brothers)…..even saw the famed ”Ice Bowl” for those old enough to know that game.

debra..you do have a good team..our QB here has Covid..hope yours stays healthy..

He had it and lied about it the dumbo, but he’s a great QB.

Wondering……anyone ordered from Hostas on the Bluff? They are on the HL home page now and they seem to have a very nice site.

your QB's great on the field..but I think his personality can be questionable..

a good chance they'll win the Superbowl..I love it when the Superbowl's over..spring is closer!..
