mixing pull placement on upper cabs

last modified: 4 years ago

Elements Arched pull in satin nickel by Hardware resources We are putting all pulls in our kitchen and I was planning to go horizontal on all drawers and vertical on all doors. The style we chose is an arch that tapers on the ends and needs to be grasped near the center. Would it look strange to mount the pulls on the higher cabs above the hood (left edge of pic) and the fridge(right edge of pic) horizontally? if not, should it be centered in the bottom rail or placed in the corners where the doors meet?

As long as you like the pulls, putting them on both drawers and doors looks fine. If, however, you've not already bought the pulls, at least do some more research and actually handle the handles you're choosing so you know they'll be comfortable to grasp from either direction. Although an arch can work well for a smaller hand, some of them can be less comfortable for a larger hand.

Suezbell, I have actually handled them in our cabinet maker's showroom and they come in several lengths. Neither my husband or I have large hands so no problems there. I just didn't know if it would look right to have them placed both vertically and horizontally on the uppers.

When it comes to a kitchen, I usually go for function over aesthetics.

Is there a six person hot tub above the kitchen by chance?

Mark B-Thanks for the confirmation since function is the reason for wanting to go horizontal in that area. I am amused at the thought of a hottub on the loft area above the kitchen -not something I had imagined. There will probably be a couch and some bookcases up there-sorry to disappoint.

I just notice the size of the ceiling beams and looked as if they were sized to support a tremendous amount of weight above.

aha! I thought of that later-that maybe the beams were included in the pic and what sparked your inquiry. They aren't solid-it is 2 2X12's with a cap so we could route wiring, plumbing etc through them. The spacing probably is a bit overbuilt but I leave that up to my man. ;-)

I'm posting your pull photo from your link.

I've seen a lot of horizontal on drawers and vertical on cabinets and tend to think hardware choices are individual and dictated by function. Do those cabinets lift up so as to make that a more useful way to install the pull? If horizontal fits those cabinets, I'd probably opt for knobs on the other cabinets.

What's going on with that cabinet to the left of the fridge/right of the window?

Thanks barncatz for posting the pic. I am a newbie here and am blind so knowing how and where to post pics is a little challenging. No, those doors just have side hinges but my thought was that if the pulls were placed vertically I would have to reach a little higher in addition to clearing the hood and fridge to open them. This pull has no coordinating knob and I like handles better so I don't have an alternative chosen. I have no special plans for that skinny cab by the fridge and if I had realized sooner how marginally useful it would be -I would have skipped it.

Is there a spice rack pull out available for that skinny cabinet?

This kitchen has horizontal pulls on drawers and vertical pulls on doors. I think it looks fine and that the pulls are located in convenient locations.

Here's another with more rectangular handles (which I prefer on your rather modern cabinets):

wdccruisewdccruise here is my curvy range hood-chosen to allow more clearance for adjoining cabs since it is angled. One of the reasons I went with the arched pull is so the hood wouldn't be the only curve. I sort of made a fool of myself when we went to the showroom to choose hardware. I had told both the cabinetmaker and my husband I thought I could make a choice quickly. My husband really liked some more rectangular ones but they felt too clinical for me. I am pretty sure the cabinet guy has already ordered these and I am locked in. I really appreciate your time and thoughts though.
